Simon Foster is without a doubt one of Queensland’s hottest up and coming young trainers. Coming off his first black type win with his first back type runner, Simon has certainly earned his stripes within the Queensland racing circuit. Principal thoroughbred race caller for Radio TAB, David Fowler, describes his win in the Listed Lightning Handicap with Trusted Partner as “one of the craftiest long-priced goes in sometime which underlines the training performance of rookie Simon Foster”. This is Simon’s first full season training horses but his relationship with thoroughbreds goes back about 25 years when he began his jockey’s apprenticeship in Adelaide - unfortunately he had to give away race riding as he became too heavy. Simon went on to spend several years working for high-profile trainers throughout Australia and overseas, fine tuning his knowledge and experience of the racing game before finally taking up his trainers license in 2010. Simon’s philosophy is to maintain a hands on approach and having a small team of up to twelve horses allows him to do that. He places emphasis on keeping his horses nice and relaxed and understands where each individual horse is at as he rides most of his own work.
