The Sint Geertruidsgasthuis, better known as the Pepergasthuis, is a hofje on the Peperstraat in Groningen.HistoryThe Pepergasthuis was founded in 1405 by Berneer Solleder and his son Albert. Originally it served as a guest house for pilgrims who came to Groningen, because the Martinikerk (Groningen) kept a relic of John the Baptist that attracted many pilgrims to Groningen. Because of that destination the guest house was named after Gertrude of Nivelles, the patron of the travellers. But the guest house had financial problems, so people like Pope Sixtus IV donated money. Menso Jetlema donated estates, but wanted the guest house to give a ton of herring to the poor people of the village of Faan every year.After the capitulation of Groningen (the Spanish Occupier capitulated for the army of Maurice of Nassau and William Louis, Count of Nassau-Dillenburg) in 1594 the complex, like all Catholic buildings, got a new destination. The guest house changed into a residential complex for older people of the city. People of 50 years and older could buy a spot in the guest house. They didn't only get a place to live till their death, but also care. The residents were called conventualen.

De Paterskerk of Onze Lieve Vrouw Onbevlekt Ontvangenkerk was een kerk in Groningen die tot 1962 in de Gelkingestraat stond. De kerk werd gebouwd in 1888 naar ontwerp van Nicolaas Molenaar sr., een leerling van P.J.H. Cuypers. Na het instellen van het bisdom Groningen in 1956 werd de kerk gesloten en kwam leeg te staan. In 1962 werd het gebouw gesloopt, ter plekke is tegenwoordig de Willem-Lodewijkpassage.AchtergrondNa de Reductie van Groningen was in de stad Groningen geen plaats meer voor de Rooms-katholieke Kerk. Alle kerkgebouwen werden overgenomen door de Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk. Dat betekende niet dat er in Groningen geen katholieken meer waren, zij moesten hun geloof echter voornamelijk in beslotenheid belijden. De zielzorg werd verzorgd door rondtrekkende priesters, vaak paters verbonden aan een kloosterorde.De Jezuïeten waren een van die ordes. Naast zielzorg was de orde vooral gedreven door het streven naar verantwoord onderwijs. De orde had al in de zestiende eeuw geprobeerd een school in Groningen te stichten, maar was daar door de Reductie niet in geslaagd. In de negentiende eeuw, na het herstel van de bisschoppelijke hiërarchie in 1853, vestigde de orde zich opnieuw in Groningen. In eerste instantie betrok de orde in 1856 een pand aan het Damsterdiep. Kort daarna kocht de orde een perceel tussen de Herestraat en de Gelkingestraat.
