Description
Russ Baker has coached baseball for the past 7 years in Alaska. He started at AOR as a coach for the Junior Red Sox team. Coach Baker served 1 year as an assistant coach then was asked to serve as Head Coach for the South High JV team and the American Legion A team. In 2011 he was asked to be the co-head coach of the Varsity and American Legion AA team. For the past two seasons, Russ has served as Head Coach for South High School Varsity and American Legion AA team. The South Anchorage High School Varsity baseball team has won State Championships in 2011 and 2013. The 2012 team finished 3rd. This is South’s longest consecutive appearance string in the State Championship series. Coach Russ Baker has reorganized the South High and South Post 4 American Legion Program after the unexpected departure of the previous head coach in July of 2011. Coach Baker was instrumental in helping South expand their Junior Varsity program to two full teams. This allows 14 additional young men to have the experience of playing a high school sport. Russ has also organized 3 pre-season trips, twice to Sitka and once to Ketchikan. This opportunity provides a chance for players to acquire valuable game experience prior to opening day. Mr. Russ Baker has also played a key part in the building of the Taylar Young Memorial Field at South High. He has been extremely generous with his knowledge, time and support for all of the players in the program. Coach Russ has been the American Legion expansion committee chairman, and this year the committee’s efforts paid off with new programs started in Juneau and Kodiak. He continues to work to expand additional baseball opportunities across the state of Alaska.
