Spina Bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States. It occurs when the spinal cord fails to close during the first months of pregnancy. Spina Bifida causes abnormalities of the brain and spine resulting in life-long disability. More than 250,000 Americans live with Spina Bifida every day.

Founded in 1973, the Spina Bifida Association of North Texas (SBANT) began as a small non-profit support group of parents. The association now serves families in north and central Texas, and reaches the panhandle and El Paso! SBANT volunteers work year-round to provide outreach, education, referrals and programs as well as information on prevention.
