It is hard to imagine not having the basic necessities at our reach, it is hard to imagine a world different from what we’re used to, it is even harder to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes and think, feel what might be like waking everyday to uncertainty, danger, poverty, and hardship. What kind of life would that be? How would I handle it? How would it change me? Would I have the courage to not give up and still find hope? Would I still be able to smile, laugh, run, and discover little miracles that would distract me from a harsh reality? As for myself, it is hard for me to imagine a world without those things that we all need for basic survival and that we take for granted; how can I truthfully say that I appreciate those little things when, thankfully, I’ve never been without them? I guess that in all honesty I truly can’t, because I’ve never been that hungry, that thirsty, or that cold; regardless of any hardship that I might be going through in life I have always had that sense of security of having food, water, education, and basic comfort at my disposal. It is truly difficult to understand the necessities and struggles of poverty in a third world country unless we have witnessed it and experienced a bit of that way of life. It is a touching, heartfelt, and in its own harshness an incredible experience that helps anyone see life from a different perspective, a perspective that we don’t really understand and that more often than not makes us feel uncomfortable. However, that way of life, that perspective, is part of a harsh reality that we have to open our eyes to, that we have to help evolve into something different, something better and not for a good deed but because it’s compassionate to do so, to care and help change it. Yes, this is another campaign that is going to ask for a donation from you, because whether we like it or not money makes a difference, money makes a change, money provides security, money provides basic necessities that not all of us were privileged enough to born with. This takes us to Katosi, Uganda and St. John Bosco School, an extremely poor school that educates orphans from around Katosi and nearby villages. These children deal with hunger, uncertainty, danger, and extreme conditions on a daily basis, however, St. John Bosco School provides them with free education and a daily lunch. This school is not supported by the Ugandan government because it is extremely low funded and does not meet the government requirements to be officially recognized. Unfortunately, the Ugandan government also considers the school to be a hazardous environment to the children, so with a deadline of February 2016 the government has warned that if a new building plan is not in process by then the school will be shut down.
