St. John's High School was founded by Dr. Mabel Aranha, Fr. Francis D'cruz and Mr. N. N. Menon in 1969. The school was housed in a modest two storey building and Dr. M. Aranha, with thirty-one years of experience and maturity in the field of education, became its first Principal. From the inception the school introduced a value and activity based system of education which has served in systematic training of the "heads, "hearts" and "hands" of the student community. The Philosophy To inculcate the right attitudes amongst the students, the school considered a planned and progressive activity over the years as a primary necessity. The school also saw the dynamic nature of the times to come and the needs of tomorrow for which they had to gear up the students today. Thus, numerous activities have been the nucleus for the overall development of the child. Besides productive activities and sound universal values, the school took the adaption to change as a necessary factor for individual growth. The School has recognised that the students required modern methods of education to keep them in tune with the developments around the worlds. And so, keeping this is mind, the school has led the way to use of audio-visual and other technologies for education. The Process The St. John's School always believed that a "bookworm" was not the ideal student. Overall development was the answer. Thus, despite the lack of a playground, physical development became and continued to be an important aspect of education. Karate, boxing, athletics, swimming and yoga were introduced at the different phases of development of the school for, only a healthy body, believed St.John's, could house a healthy mind. For intellectual development and encouragement of histrionic talent dramatics, right from the start, enjoyed an important place.It has thus not been uncommon to witness St. John's staging works of writers ranging from Kalidasa to Tagore and from Shakespeare to Hans Anderson. Epics like the "Mahabharat" took the pride of the place and children, since then, were encouraged to write their own short skirts. To promote proficiency in the use of advanced technology St.John's has started the training in computers from Std. I. It has computerised the administrative systems, introduced CD ROM's for literature research. These systems are on par with the current programs in the advanced countries even if it is introduced at St. John's at a lower scale. St. John's Library "Books are lighthouses in the sea of Time". Knowledge over the ages has been best and most extensively recorded in the written word. Look into the history of any civilisation and you will see that all knowledge has been attempted to be put in writing; right from the ancient clay tablets to the modern fine paper. We have since then come a long way and have accumulated knowledge and information over the centuries on innumerable subjects; knowledge which is vast inexhaustible and dynamic i.e. to say ever growing in nature. So the biggest problem that man faces even today is - How to harness all this knowledge and make it systematically available for the benefit of every man? Ponder over this problem and the vital role of a library then comes to light. The library then surfaces as a major institution in educating and in communicating in the growing of this world. St. John's Library started before the academic year 1992-93, when a qualified and experienced librarian was appointed to set up a new library. The setting up was tedious but necessary process to introduce computerized catalogue system and the Dewey Decimal system both used internationally by modern libraries. During this period the Library has purchased nearly 2,500 books in addition to about 5000 already in our library including works of fiction, non-fiction, biographies, plays, poetry, grammar and what-have-you. Besides, their is a regular subscription to periodicals and magazines to keep abreast with contemporary issues. We have about 20 compact disks for our CD ROM, (Compact Disk Read Only Memory). The Library promises to be a boon for St. John's students because of the following: • A system is being introduced to allow the students to select the books with the help of computers during the computer period. This would teach the students a practical use of computers for selection of books and reduce the traffic in our small library. • CD ROM. Multimedia purchased by the library will be introduced to our students and teachers. This would possibly be done for higher classes during the next year.
