Description

St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, was established by the Christian Brothers in 1875. There are four campuses – the main campus at Gregory Terrace, Waterford Place (Year 10s), 10ha of sporting facilities at Tennyson and Outdoor Education Centre at Lake Maroon. Academic outcomes for students are a focus in providing a balanced education. The College has a distinguished academic history that has produced 17 Rhodes Scholars. Year 12 students have continually excelled with more than 20 OP1s achieved each year for the last 3 years. Co-curricular activities are a key aspect of the holistic education provided. The College has a proud sporting tradition and offers a wide range of sporting pursuits, including Rugby, Football, Gymnastics, Cricket, Rowing, Swimming, Athletics, Tennis and Basketball. Among the College's exceptional sporting facilities is more than 10h of sporting fields at Tennyson – equal to any school in Australia, and including the largest Rowing Shed of its type in the southern hemisphere. Terrace has a varied Music program in which boys from Years 5 to 7 are provided with musical instruments and lessons while older students are encouraged to learn a musical instrument or continue with tuition. There are a large number of bands, ensembles, orchestras and choirs. Debating also has proved a consistent source of achievement for Terrace students. A key facet of the College's caring environment is the House system. On arriving at Terrace, students are placed in one of nine Houses under the direction of a House Dean. The Houses, which cater for students from Years 5-12, are divided into Tutor Groups, each led by a staff tutor, with the Year 12 students cast as role models. There are approximately 18 students in each Tutor Group. Tutors meet twice daily with students.
