The St. Louis Farm School is a mixed-aged, play-based, nature-inspired community of homeschooling families.
Core Values Our primarily outdoor learning environment allows children to learn from the natural world around them as well as from other children of varying ages. Through interacting with plants and animals, as well as engaging in real work and performing self-sufficiency skills, children realize their agency and ability to affect change in their worlds. Even the youngest children learn responsibility by being given responsibility. Participating children are trusted to govern their own learning. Our 'curriculum' is emergent, and subjects such as mathematics and literacy will be explored occasionally, as learning opportunities naturally arise. Adults respect each individual child’s own learning pace and provide gentle guidance to prompt reflection and encourage further curiosity. The St. Louis Farm Homeschool Co-Op embraces and practices the following key components of an alternative education: An outdoor learning environment A mixed-age environment A student-centered, project-based approach to learning in which adults act as facilitators, not dictators, of learning A focus on the discovery process of learning over a specific set of skills or products Shared decision-making among participating children and families Vision for the Future A key element of our work together is constant reflection. We will use our mission & core values to regularly assess our co-op experience and determine what is working and what may not be. We are always seeking to learn, change, grow and improve. As we “learn” one another, our mission and core values may change slightly to reflect our evolving relationship. Our long-range goal continues to be to find a permanent learning location for our co-op on a working farm, and to offer a full-day, combination drop-off/co-op program for children ages 3 - 14. “Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.” - Frank Lloyd Wright
