Steppers West Associates (SWA)- Why We Teach Dance to Guide Healthy Lifestyles Dance is great for helping people of all ages and physical abilities get and stay in shape. You can get a great mind-body workout and with Steppin you get every benefit ascribed to dance. The Dance “Steppin” is a 6 count swing dance that is also know as Chicago Steppin or Urban Ballroom. Many people choose dancing verses going to the gym and other traditional exercise outlets because it is fun and enjoyable and they stick to it! Researchers have learned that regular physical activity in general can help keep your body, including your brain, healthy as you age. Exercise increases the level of brain chemicals that encourage nerve cells to grow. Dancing that requires you to remember dance steps and sequences boosts brain power more than traditional exercise (running, walking, cycling, climbing,) by improving memory skills which is the foundation of the dances provided by SWA, and you get all of the great benefits that traditional exercise gives. There's even chair dancing for people with physical limitations. A 150-pound adult can burn about 150 calories doing 30 minutes of moderate social dancing. Dancing contains a social component that solitary fitness endeavors don't. Because dance and music are universal people from all ethnicities and backgrounds get involved. Steppers West Associates work to inform and empower people about health issues. We use an interactive approach to encouraging children and adults to make healthy lifestyle changes, including teaching them dance because people enjoy it and will stick with it long term. SWA helps individuals engage in regular moderate physical activity through dance and encourages limiting television and other sedentary activities. With the number of people continuing to request and participate in Steppin Urban Ballroom Dance, we look forward to making a positive measurable impact on the overall health of our community. When you come to a SWA event, the idea is to make health and fitness fun! By having activities that make people want to come out, the fun of the event captivates you and the activities and health information educates you.
