Street Doctors provide education to at-risk young people on basic first aid for stabbings and shot wounds. We aim to empower individuals and save lives.

Description

Street Doctors is a charity started in 2008 by junior doctors in Liverpool who realised that an alarming number of young people were exposed to knife and gun crime, but had no information on how to deal with subsequent injuries. As a result, they panicked and often resorted to running away from the injured. These doctors realised that in providing basic first aid and training on how to deal with someone who gets stabbed, they could provide life-saving treatment. Street Doctors has a volunteer network of over 300 people across medical schools in the UK. Glasgow is the first city in Scotland to which Street Doctors is expanding, and we are excited to see what work can be done. We will be teaching in youth offending units, prisons and detention centres to offer young people at risk basic training in the immediate management of traumatic injuries. We aim to do this in a fun, engaging and practical way. The vision is to educate and empower young people to know how to handle emergency situations and hopefully provide a platform into further education within the healthcare sphere.
