A whimsical name for all children, Sugar Bean is an endearing term for that little person sprouting up from a baby to a big boy or girl. Why Smocked Like Me? Sugar Beans is proud to roll out line of hand-crafted unique and classically inspired children’s clothes designed with children of color in mind. Smocked Like Me showcases an array of colors, characters and themes as diverse as the children who wear them. The thrill of shopping for your Sugar Bean doesn’t end when the nursery is completed. It seems like yesterday I hit the mall in search of cute baby clothes for my baby girl. As most mothers, I felt so excited buying cute baby clothes for my first child. I remember going to a clothing boutique and absolutely falling in love with a pink gingham outfit featuring an appliquéd scene from my favorite fairy tale, Cinderella. There was just one problem. The princess had blonde hair and blue eyes and my beautiful princess did not. Would my Sugar Bean notice? How would she feel? As a new Mom, I immediately became aware of the impact the world would have on my daughter before she could even say, “Mama”! Without hesitation, I asked the boutique owner if I could get the outfit with a dark-haired princess with brown skin. She looked at me quizzically and said, “They don’t make these outfits with brown-skinned characters – at least that I have ever seen.” She looked stunned like I had made the oddest request. I did not purchase the outfit that day, and a mission was born. Every child should be able to look into the world and see themselves somewhere in it. Among the sea of characters with blonde hair, blue eyes and snow-white skin, are stories and characters with hues of brown and black, dark eyes and dark hair too! It is our humble mission to bring them forth.
