Description

Summit Charter School (district #4232) is a K-6 public charter school based in South Minneapolis. The school is established to provide students with a STEM-focused education, to prepare students to become excellent questioners, scientific thinkers, and responsible citizens. It is our duty to make sure that we bring new learning methods into our classrooms to spark each child’s mind. That is why, we are working on including at least one outdoors session each week. Teachers will also meet with a mentor once a week to plan for the upcoming week and to adjust their curriculum. The primary learning environment at Summit Charter School will be the classroom, heavily augmented with technology. There will also be opportunities to learn outside of the classroom on planned STEM field trips as well as site visits to partners: individuals, organizations or otherwise. We are also working on bringing professionals into our classrooms to talk to the children and motivate them. We believe that if children see professionals that look like them, they will be able to see themselves as professionals in the future. We strive to prepare our students to succeed in a fast-paced, changing world that depends heavily on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We believe that our students should acquire critical knowledge and skills required for employment in STEM careers from an early age. We are confident that with the right mindset, all our students can transform into citizens who think independently, critically, creatively, and ethically. Students should see themselves as valuable beings that can contribute back to society, in the long run. As a public charter school open to all students, we also reach out to students who are not represented within STEM fields. Currently, we have about 100 students enrolled, with our student enrollment aim at 140. We expect our student poverty rate to fall around 85-90%. The Minnesota State Academic Standards constitutes the curriculum guideline for Summit Charter School. In every subject area, teachers will ensure that all benchmarks contained in the standards will be met before year’s end. Anything missing from textbooks will be implemented into the curriculum to ensure that students do not miss out on meeting the State’s standards. An important distinction in the planning for teachers at Summit Charter School will be that teachers in collaboration with the lead teacher will determine when standards will be taught and how. Also classroom teachers will work closely with the lead teacher to create weekly, monthly and quarterly assessments. Our facility consists of 4 floors. Each classroom will be equipped with a smartboard to ensure that students receive the maximum amount of education. Our facility has a gymnasium where P.E. classes will be held, a cafeteria which can also be transformed into an auditorium (stage included), and a computer lab. We are currently working on setting up our school library. Our school also has a garden where vegetables grow. The Executive Director of Summit Charter School, Magdy Rabeaa, believes that food should be organic and clean. That is why Summit Charter School will cater food from a company that makes their food from scratch daily. The school garden is an excellent tool in helping students understand where the food we eat originates from.
