My name is Dawn and I am the owner and founder of Sundial Soap Company. I specialise in handmade/crafted soaps, bath bombs, and bath melts, and I am constantly looking for new products to add to my line. Why choose a handmade soap when shop bought soap can be so much cheaper? These are the kind of questions I used to ask myself before doing some extensive research into this. I have 2 children who have sensitive skin, one of which who suffers from eczema. I tried every shop bought bar of soap you can imagine, including the ones that claimed to be the “mildest” soap, or “gentle” on the skin. After each new bar, I would find myself back at the doctors with my child looking for a new cream or lotion that would heal his skin again. Eventually I thought enough is enough and decided to research myself into what could be causing these “flare ups” as the doctor called them, and this is what I came up with. CONVENTIONAL SOAP BARS Much of the soap available in store today are not really soaps at all but a detergent!! Detergents are petroleum based like gasoline or kerosene. These ingredients can leave your skin feeling dry and itchy and in some cases can cause severe skin irritations. Different bars of soap are made using a variety of different oils. Both animal and plant oils can be used in the soap making process. The most common ingredient used in conventional soap is sodium tallowate. This is made combining tallow or beef fat with lye, as this produces a hard bar of soap that is cheap and plentiful. If we were more educated on the products used in some soaps I am sure we would all rethink what we are putting on our skin. BENEFITS OF A HANDMADE SOAP While there is nothing new about handmade soap, its popularity is growing rapidly as people become more aware of what is healthy and what is not. Evidence abounds of the healing properties of handmade soap. Those who suffer from skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis or even just sensitive skin often find immediate relief by switching to a handmade soap. Compared to commercialised soap handmade soap is very mild. They are often made from oils such as olive, coconut, palm, and even goats milk, which means they don’t contain any of the harmful chemicals. The biggest difference between the 2 soaps are glycerine. Glycerine leaves your skin soft and healthy which is especially good for sensitive and delicate skin as well as children. Most commercialised soap bars have the glycerine extracted so that it can be sold on to be used in higher priced products such as lotions and skin creams. Most handmade soaps can also boast about the essential oils that go into each bar. Again this is where most commercialised soaps fail. And as most of us already know, essential oils have been used for thousands of years to help cure or aide a multitude of ailments. But don’t just take my word for it. Try a bar of handmade soap and I am sure you will notice an immediate difference. Although I don’t claim that my soaps will heal any skin conditions, I can say that it will be one of the mildest soaps that you can use.
