Description

Tarrant High School was established by the Ministry of Education in 1961 as Tarrant Senior School. It was designed to serve the needs of the 11-15 year old students of the neighbouring All-Age schools. Reverend J.T. Clarke was selected as the first chairman and Mr. J.W. Davis was appointed the first principal. A staff of fourteen (14) was selected and the first staff meeting was held on the April 10, 1961. The school’s admissions register shows that registration of students was first done on the April 17, 1961. Six hundred and seventy-one (671) students were admitted. The school was officially opened on March 8, 1962 by then Minister of Education, The Honourable Florizel Glasspole. In 1967, as mandated by the Ministry of Education, the school officially changed from a Senior School to a JuniorSecondary School.After serving for six years as principal, Mr. J. W. Davis retired in August 1967, and Mr Donald Collins assumed the role of principal on September 1, 1967. Mr. Collins pioneered a number of initiatives which formed the framework for the Junior Secondary School System in Jamaica. The problem of inadequate student accommodation, not only at Tarrant, but throughout the island, was a cause for concern. Through Mr Collins’ discussions with the Ministry of Education, a decision was taken to experiment with the shift system. The shift system at Tarrant Junior Secondary School started in September 1972, with approximately 1,350 students and a staff of 70 teachers. In 1974, with the introduction of Grades 10 and 11, the school became a New Secondary School offering technical and vocational programmes.
