Description

Project aims - The purpose of this study is to determine the knowledge, attitudes and food handling and storage practices of people receiving chemotherapy treatment and of those responsible for their food preparation. Data that will be used to inform the development of educational interventions for future health promotion among people receiving treatment for cancer. Background of project - There is a crucial need to maintain the health of people when receiving treatment for cancer particularly in relation to food consumption practices. To enable this through health education there is a need to determine knowledge, opinions and current practices relating to food consumption, particularly in the home. This can inform the development of intervention sources, which may help to reduce the incidence of illness associated with food and ensure that minimal additional side-effects of treatment occur. Participating in the study - We are looking for people that have received chemotherapy or that have been responsible for the food preparation of someone that has received chemotherapy in the last three years to complete the questionnaire. Completion of which will take approximately 15 minutes, questions are multiple-choice and guidance on answering is given with each question. There is also the opportunity to indicate your interest in participating in a focus group to aid the design, development and evaluation of a food safety resource for people receiving chemotherapy and their associated caregivers, for which participants will be given a £20 voucher for participation. Returning the questionnaire - if you wish to complete a paper-based questionnaire this can be sent out in the post to you, which once completed can be returned using a provided prepaid return envelope. Please provide your contact details on the questionnaire return slip and return with the questionnaire to be entered into the draw to win a £100 voucher of your choice (e.g. Tesco, Marks and Spencer’s, John Lewis, Costa, Amazon, Sports Direct). Confidentiality - Taking part is completely voluntary. All information gathered from this study will remain confidential and data reported will be anonymous. All participant information will be securely disposed of following completion of the work. A summary of the research findings will be available by contacting the researcher. Advantages - One person will win a £100 voucher of their choice (e.g. Tesco, Marks and Spencer’s, John Lewis, Costa, Amazon, Sports Direct) for completing a questionnaire. Although there may not be any direct benefits to you, your participation will be contributing to a study which will increase understand of food habits during chemotherapy, such findings will help the development of educational interventions to maintain the health of people with cancer during treatment. Ethical approval - The project has been assessed and approved by a University Research and Ethics Committee, project reference: 0001-SREC-2014(01).
