May 9, 2014 Friends and Customers, We here at Teri Cigar Company would like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal customers and friends for your past support. We have truly enjoyed providing you with our fresh, hand-rolled cigars during all these years. However, after 43 years in business we have decided to close down; as of April 30th our doors will be closed for ever. It was a difficult decision because this business was started by our father in 1971. He wanted to provide his customers with the infamous Cuban, hand-rolled, cigar experience as he did in his home country – so he established The Teri Cigar Company. Throughout the years his loyal customers became his friends. Several years later our father brought us in to continue his legacy. He trained us in the Cuban-style of rolling cigars. And then we enthusiastically took over the business. We are deeply saddened to come to this conclusion, but unfortunately the numerous government regulations and ever-increasing taxes have made it practically impossible for us to continue and remain profitable. Sincerely, Tony and Franky

Wanted to thank everyone for the kind word's, and wish we could have continued. The Article below was from July 2010, John Kelly Owner of Kelly's Men's Shop in Old Town Tustin Explained the Taxing Situation for Cigar Retailers in California. Just read today that he to was forced out of Business and has Closed his Doors after 30+ Years. Examiner.com July 23, 2010 No matter what side the “Smoking” issue you stand, losing another business to California’s tax and spend attack on small business must to stop. For the sake of this article, we can stipulate to there being a large constituency who have a strong hatred for cigarettes and have even more distain for cigars; also, like it or not, smoking remains legal in California; with all its restrictions. I pose to you these questions: Is it fair that California allows “Out of State” tobacco dealers to sell tens of thousands of dollars of tobacco product s in our State without paying a penny in taxes? Is it fair that if you are a retail business in this State, dealing in Tobacco products, you not only have to follow strict State and Federal guidelines, you are forced to become a non-paid Tax Collector? Answer: Absolutely not! For those extremists who want to see ALL tobacco sales banned in California and make us a “Smoke Free State”, consider this, “once all tobacco sales are banned, what will be the next life-style choice to attack? How about McDonald’s fries… Pepsi… how about drive-thru coffee stands? The phrase “slippery slope” comes to mind. In an interview with John Kelly, owner of Kelly’s Formal Wear and Cigar located in Historical Old Tustin, in respect to the slippery slope, he remarks, “Yes, we have been moving in that direction for a very long time.” Mr. Kelly has been doing business at his Old Town District shop, 330 El Camino Real, in the City of Tustin for more than 30 years. Kelly is now considering closing his doors; not by choice but necessity. He went on to explain that, “California and ATF regulations and restrictions imposed on me (and other tobacco retailers), puts me at such an extreme disadvantage I can’t afford to keep my doors open.” Kelly further explained that, “he is required to follow strict rules for collecting, documenting and paying the taxes on tobacco products and sales; rules that out of State dealers (most online) are not required to follow.” He added, “This puts those of us selling tobacco in California at an extreme disadvantage.” You would think that California, being in such disarray and nearing bankruptcy (not to mention Uncle Arnold’s love of cigars), would jump… no leap at a chance to suck more tax dollars from the wallets of California’s consumers. Those in Sacramento could even put the usual spin on it, “we only want to make it fair” or “let’s even the playing field” or maybe “can’t we all just get alone?” Look at the upside in doing this, California would be able to not only rip off business owners in their own state they would be able stick it to businesses outside the state as well. What’s not to like? Sounds like a win, win to me. If California and the ATF would do their job collecting these taxes and not burdening shop owners with the task of doing it for them, Mr. Kelly would be able to compete with East Coast mail-order and online stores... at least until the life-style police and smoking ban extremist get their way. So, put that in your pipe and smoke it…
