Description

4 What It’s Worth. David, Sheian and Olivia Hickey Most stories begin with a dream and this one is no different. After travelling on the road for 12 years with Crystal Journey and after performing over a 1000 concerts in that span it seemed like it was time for a break. Being on the road is an amazing experience but it also can be tiresome; driving long distances between shows, staying in creepy motels and having to eat very unhealthy food takes its toll. It was in 2012 that I finally built a studio in my home to perform private concerts in. I met my wife at my very first home show and that is where this story and dream begin. We had a few more concerts after our meeting but it soon became apparent that this was more our private space then a public one. The only thing was that the space was filled with beautiful and powerful crystals, mostly giant Amethyst Cathedrals. We also have some really beautiful Quartz and Smokey Quartz pieces as well. This was truly a crystal cave. We wanted people to see these amazing beings and needed a place to do that. The space did provide a safe and healing place to begin our journey into parenthood, almost every day I played the Bowls and Gongs to Sheian while she relaxed and enjoyed feeling our baby respond to the music and crystals. As time passed we still continued to perform on the road but the urge to have our own space to publicly perform in and show that crystals kept persisting. We looked at many spaces in Hamilton and found a few that we really liked but something was just not right about each one, either it was the area, the space itself or the rent was too high. We stopped looking for a while but it was Easter weekend that we went out to our favorite place for a Vegan chocolate cupcake and that is when the Dream began to become a reality. There was a space for rent across the street from the café we were eating at and I saw a for lease sign in the window of a second floor building. We walked by and took down the number and called the listing agent. Upon first viewing it became Crystal Clear we had found our space. The space is a beautiful open concept with a loft, there was more than enough room to showcase the crystals and instruments. Acoustics were a high priority and the space provides that as well. We wanted a room that people could walk into and never want to leave. We feel that this is what “4 What Its Worth” provides. You may be wondering where we came up with the name? "For What It's Worth" is a song written by Stephen Stills. It was performed by Buffalo Springfield, recorded on December 5, 1966. The song was inspired by an event that took place during the early stages of the psychedelic era in November 1966, the year in which Buffalo Springfield started playing as the house band at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles Times annoyed residents and business owners in the district had encouraged the passage of strict (10:00 p.m.) curfew and loitering laws to reduce the traffic congestion resulting from crowds of young club patrons. This was subsequently perceived by young, local rock and roll music fans as an infringement on their civil rights, and on Saturday, November 12, 1966, fliers were distributed along the Strip inviting people to demonstrate later that day. Stephen Stills pointed out that many people think "For What It's Worth" is about the Kent State Shootings (1970), even though the song predates that event by over three years.[7] Neil Young, Stills' bandmate in both Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, would later write "Ohio", in response to the events at Kent State. So as you can see this song has a lot of history and meaning, it also just happens to be our favorite song from the 60’s. And just as side note as mentioned it was recorded on Dec 5th, 1966, I was born on Dec 6th 1967. As soon as we decided to search for a space “4 What It’s Worth” was the Only name that came to mind and heart. A name is everything when trying to convey a message and “4 What It’s Worth” is a place to feel welcome, safe and rejuvenated. We want people to feel they will get everything “4 What It’s Worth” Now a little bit more about what the space will provide, we will host a variety of acoustic concerts starting with Crystal Journey on June 6th This concert will showcase Paiste Planet and Symphonic Gongs, Quartz Crystal Bowls and Santoor’s from Iran. Crystal Journey will be the “House Band” so to speak, there will also be regular Gong Baths and Middle Eastern nights with just the Santoor’s. Other music will include Gary Diggins and his arsenal of World Instruments, we will host regular Kirtan nights with John William Bauld and Shonna Brown. Other types of music including Bluegrass and World Music. The space is very intimate with room for 30 people so you will be able to be part of the performance not only as a listener but part of the music. You will be surrounded by amazing crystals and posters from the 60’s, George Harrison and The Grateful Dead, there are also beautiful Statues of Krishna, Buddha and Ganesha, this is a tribute to George who was very influenced by India and it’s music. ‘4 What It’s Worth” will also host Yoga and workshops including topics that will enhance your lifestyle and wellbeing, including becoming Vegan and its importance on our environment. We want to offer people events that will empower and inspire them. The retail part of the space will have one of kind Crystal’s and Geodes, Tibetan Bowls and Bells, Tingsha’s, Crystal Bowls and Tapestries. We want to provide items that carry a memory of the experience while visiting “4 What It’s Worth” In closing I would like to invite you to come and visit us at 215 Locke St South in Hamilton. You can visit our Facebook page for updates on concerts and workshops. We look forward to seeing you. David, Sheian and Olivia Hickey
