Main building was built in 1913, and used to be a food cannery. As of last year, it has been the Jay Etkin’s building, functioning as an art gallery. The South Main Historic District is a colorful community with a distinct appeal all of its own. Tucked away on the southern end of Main Street in downtown Memphis, this neighborhood was humming with activity in the early 1900s. Central Station provided a mecca of transportation for Memphians, with fifty trains leaving the station each day. Surrounding the train station there were at least eight restaurants and eleven hotels to chose from, one of which is the infamous Lorraine Motel. As with the 409 South Main building, there were many manufactures, warehouses, and merchants. The area took a hit with the onset of the Great Depression and then again, in the 1950s, with the declining of the railroad industry; causing many businesses to fail. The South Main area sat idle and nearly abandoned in the 1960s and 70s. In the 1980s the city started to revitalize and build up businesses in the Historical District. Twenty years later, present day South Main Historical district is thriving with a plethora of restaurants, shops, art galleries, and nightlife. Also new to the area are the many condominiums and lofts that have sprung up all over the South Main Area making it quite the hotspot of Downtown Memphis. All of these current South Main attractions possess their own flavor and contribute to the South Main district's unique appeal. NEAR BY Due to 409 South Main's convenient location to one of many Downtown trolley stops, many great Downtown destinations are just a moments away.
