Description

It was the summer of 1985. The Cerebral Palsy/Les Autres National Games invited the dwarf community to their Olympic-style competition at Michigan State University. Some events pitted the 30 participating dwarf athletes against each other. The experience was life-altering – the Dwarf Athletic Association of America was created on the spot. Almost three decades later, DAAA invites the World back to MSU for the largest sports event in history exclusively for athletes with dwarfism. The World Dwarf Games 2017 will be the largest sporting event in history held exclusively for athletes with dwarfism. Its goal is to attract athletes with dwarfism from around the world to participate in sports that include basketball, soccer, track and field, volleyball, swimming, table tennis, badminton, floor hockey, boccia, archery, kurling, powerlifting and marksmanship. Athletes of all ages and every level of ability will be encouraged to participate in team and individual sports and explore their own athletic abilities with others of similar stature. Participants will also participate in special events to celebrate international understanding, promote awareness of the dwarf experience worldwide, provide on-site clinics for athletes and sports professionals and introduce participants to elite athletes with dwarfism, many of whom have participated in international competitions such as the Parapan Am Games and Paralympics. Our aim is to provide the participants, their families and supporters, a welcoming and supportive environment for excellent sport competition at the University of Guelph’s state of the art facilities, while providing opportunities for forging lifelong friendships.
