WHY I CREATED THE ART GYM... Several months ago on a sunny weekend in spring three events happened that lit the light bulb over my head and inspired me to create The Art Gym. The first Event - A cup of tea with a new friend. Sipping our aromatics, my new friend brought out a little watercolour painting she had made and wanted my thoughts on how she could improve it. Like so many people, she wanted to paint, had ideas of things she'd like to make, but didn't really know what materials to buy, how to use them, or how to create a pleasing composition, etc..... I gave her a few tips and tricks and she was ecstatic. . Hmmm, I thought to myself as I gave her a hug goodbye, that was fun to talk art, share my knowledge, and hang out with a friend. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon. The second Event happened later that night. As I was painting, another friend dropped by for a visit. Rather than stop mid-brushstroke, my friend joined in, making a pinch pot with my daughter in my studio while I kept painting. What fun we had working on our own projects together, chatting, encouraging, giving each other feedback. it was a great night and the culmination of Event #1 and 2 made my brain begin to burble! Finally event #3 took me right over the edge. The following day I was out visiting another artist friend helping her with a particular project she was working on. As we painted together she mentioned to me how lonely sometimes she felt creating by herself. She said that often she felt like her studio was a great vacuum that sucked in all her inspiration leaving her feeling empty and alone. She said how much she would love it if she had a place she could go and work on her artwork with other creative minds around. To be able to marinate in the glow of other people and their ideas. My brain began to boil and overflow... Working out at the gym later that day I pondered all three events while spinning on the stationary bike, lifting weights, and sweating it out with my fellow gym mates. And All at once it struck me! I want to create my own gym, but instead of weights and treadmills to workout the body, I want art supplies to workout the mind. I want a place where instead of experimenting with free weights or weight machines, members can try acrylics, oils or watercolours. Instead of asking a personal trainer how to do squats, I can have artist "experts" to offer advice on how to use all the different mediums. Instead of spotting each other doing bench presses, we can "spot" each other's landscapes, portraits, or abstracts. I knew in that moment without a shadow of doubt that this idea was good. I know it is right. A gym for artists... yes I'm going to create The Art Gym!
