The Backpack Initiative at Pittsburgh Linden seeks to supplement weekend food supplies for students who qualify for free meals during the school week.
The Pittsburgh Linden Elementary K-5 Backpack Initiative is Collecting Food Items for Students in Need Many students qualify for the National School Lunch Program, which assures that eligible students receive free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast on school days. For many area families and millions of children across the nation, securing meals during the weekend can prove to be difficult. Due to those difficulties, the Linden Backpack Initiative is being created. The initiative will supplement weekend food supplies for students who qualify for free meals during the school day. Students can go home each week with individual care packages of food packed by Pittsburgh Linden volunteers. Currently, 64% of the Pittsburgh Linden students are eligible for the Free and Reduced Lunch program. The PTA is assisting 5% of those students with this program. That percent is expected to grow and we need community support to maintain this program! This program operates on donations, and we need your support. Suggested donations include single-serving and individually packaged: • Oatmeal • Pudding • Snack Crackers • Sandwich Crackers • Fruit cups • Single-Serving Cereals • Granola and Cereal Bars • Hearty Soups • Canned Pasta Meals • Tuna • Boxed Macaroni & Cheese Monetary donations also are accepted and can be sent to: Pittsburgh Linden PTA Attn: Backpack Initiative 725 S. Linden Ave. Pittsburgh, Pa. 15208 Make checks payable to Pittsburgh Linden PTA and include “Backpack Initiative” in the memo line. A simple donation of $6 feeds a child for a weekend, $185 feeds a child for the entire school year.
