Self employment requires a lot of discipline. When I ask new students at The Barber School, " Why did you choose Barbering?" The number one response is to be my own boss. I love to see people are chasing the American Apple Pie ( self employed). But, I wonder do they really understand what being self employed as a barber is about. Do they understand general business, principles. People don't know the trade so they enroll in school. Some think they know the trade and say they are in school for hours and license, only. So many barbers struggle in the industry because they don't understand general business and they have major character defects that need attending to. Barbers and Barbershops don't understand professionalism or they don't practice it. Self employment is ruining the professionalism in the barber industry. It is allowing barbers to behave in an abnormal business behavior. A behavior that normal people of society is not use to. Barbers are so unprofessional, they don't have set business hours, no set shop prices, shops are filthy and unsanitary, barber tools need attention ( blades ( dull or set to close) no supplies, need repair, lack of supplies ( always borrowing)). Is this why we want to be self employed? A licensed Barber can almost work at any shop in town. Shop owners just want the booth rental. Self employed barbers choose a shop. just like the shop owners choose who they allow to work in their shop. If you choose the wrong shop ( the shop is affecting you getting your money for any reason) that's your fault, leave. Find the right shop that will allow you be the shop owner you want to be. You must be able to run your business your way to maximize your income. Self employment requires marketing and advertisement. STOP complaining about a lack of clients or the shop is slow. I have never seen a slow shop. In a booth rental barber shop all the people working in the BUILDING are self employed. STOP blaming the shop owner, when you don't have clientele. Take full responsibility, when self employed. Why Barbershops don't advertise like other business ( on a regular) to keep clients coming? Most shops staff can't agree on agree on who pays for advertising . See it's hard to run a good business without a boss or someone in charge. No structure. See, their is more to barbering than hair cutting skills. You better learn general business principles, work on your character and check your SORRY self. When you are a booth rental barber you are self employed and everything is on YOU, good or bad. Stop blaming others cause you don't have clients and can't make a rack per week. Blame your Boss, your SORRY self. Some way have thought barbering was a game and it appeared to be simple/easy. About 75% of our students get a license but only a few master the entire game ( years later). Some of ya'll wouldn't listen in school thought you knew it all, didn't want to listen to the wise folks. These are normally the ones with license and but can't make the money. Do a self evaluation. Ask yourself, why am I not where I desire to be in Barbering? YOU are the common denominator with all your problems. I'm feeling some type of way today about my industry ( Barbering). Work on You in the Barber Industry. This is how I feel and I will be sharing with you more. If you any questions or responses , sound out. Remember, " Your future is in a your HANDS" -TBROOKS
