Description

Named after the Bimini Islands in the Bahamas, Bimini’s first opened its doors in 1974 after being granted the Province’s first Neighborhood Pub license. The busy bar was quickly embraced by the post Summer of Love-era hippie locals; environmental agency Greenpeace’s head office was across the street, and many of their radical plots were hatched in strategy meetings over pints at Bim’s. After a successful decade or so, the bar fell into disrepair until it was bought by a 24-year old Jeff Donnelly in 1999. It would be his first solo project. Jeff and his team breathed new life into the 90-year old building and made the pub incredibly successful once again. The Bimini’s of the early 2000s was one of Vancouver’s first ‘cross-use’ bars – changing from a traditional pub to a DJ-driven party most evenings, hosting everything from dueling pianos to live cover bands to dart leagues. On Oct 4 2007, the day before the bar was set to reopen after a $250, 000 renovation, a fire engulfed the venue’s interior, leaving almost nothing to be salvaged. It would take four years of countless hurdles before reconstruction could begin. The Bimini Public House, as it is now known, was designed by Evoke International Designs in conjunction with Jeff Donnelly. The historic public house uses new materials throughout – imported patterned tile and custom light fixtures and furniture – as well as 85 year old wood reclaimed from a defunct Vancouver mill, to give the room a modern but warm, familiar feel. Much of the structure is the same – the high ceilings and upper and lower mezzanines remain – but new guests both returning and new will appreciate the re-imagined games room, jukebox, and thoughtful finishings. The Bimini expects to once again be the local public house of choice for Kitsilano residents and a destination for those wanting to enjoy themselves outside of the Entertainment Districts.
