Flynn Center for the Performing Arts

An Art Deco landmark in downtown Burlington, VT, hosting the finest international, national, and regional performing arts events in its 1,411 seat main theater and FlynnSpace, an intimate, 150-seat venue. www.flynncenter.org The Flynn Center offers a full range of cultural and educational experiences to our community and plays an important role in nurturing the creative development of new work by both national and local performing artists. Events presented by the Flynn are carefully selected from among the finest performers and performances in the world. These are often rare opportunities available in only a limited number of major cities in the United States. Regularly scheduled performances at the Flynn include: • The Flynn MainStage Series, featuring world-class music, Broadway, theater, dance, and family performances. • Intimate music, theater, and dance experiences in FlynnSpace, a small, flexible performance space. • The Student Matinee Series, which annually offers more than 35 quality performances to an average of 45,000 schoolchildren in grades K-12, representing approximately 170 schools and 180 home-schooling families from throughout Vermont and upstate New York. • The nationally recognized Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. The Flynn Center's educational programs connect audiences with the performing arts in deep and meaningful ways through a wide range of activities. • FlynnArts, a year-round program of performing arts classes in dance, theater, and music for children, teens, and adults, features the region's most accomplished professional arts faculty, small creative classes, a sequential curriculum, six- and twelve-week programs, a jazz program, a summer dance intensive, summer camps, performance ensembles, workshops, and masterclasses with visiting artists. • Pre-show lectures and post-performance question-and-answer sessions give contexts to enrich the evening MainStage and FlynnSpace shows. • Companion workshops in schools further engage students with the art forms and content presented in the student matinees. • Words Come Alive! workshops in schools demonstrate how theater, dance, and drama activities can strengthen students' understanding of and engagement in literature, social studies, history, or science. • Workshops and graduate courses for teachers in association with Saint Michael's College Graduate Education Program and the Vermont Alliance for Arts Education present ways to integrate performing arts into classrooms. • Partnerships with the Chittenden South School District (through the Kennedy Center's Partners in Education program), Highgate Elementary School, Robinson School in Starksboro, and Burlington Public Schools work to make the arts an integral part of educational life. • FlynnArts is an associate member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts. In addition to presenting more than 60 of our own performances on the MainStage and in FlynnSpace each season, the Flynn Center also provides a professionally managed performance home for many community arts organizations and for regional promoters. These include: • UVM Lane Series • Vermont Symphony Orchestra • Vermont Youth Orchestra • Lyric Theatre Company • Vermont Stage Company • Albany-Berkshire Ballet • Area promoters MainStage and FlynnSpace users have access to a full range of services, including extensive technical equipment and support, box office sales, trained volunteer ushers, marketing exposure, reduced rental rates for non-profit organizations, and more. The quality of our facilities and services helps attract leading concert promoters and major events to Burlington. Through its facilities and programs, the Flynn Center reaches out to meet important community needs in a variety of ways: • The PACT (Providing Accessible Community Tickets) Program partners with more than 70 Vermont social service agencies each year to make performances and activities accessible and affordable to people who might otherwise be unable to enjoy the performing arts. Last year nearly 2,000 people received vouchers for $2 tickets to Flynn performances through PACT. • An average of 15 percent of our Student Matinee Series tickets are provided to schools at no cost, based on student need. • Scholarships are made available to students in the FlynnArts performing arts education program, making participation in music, theater, and dance classes possible for a wide range of students.
