The Cantie Museum looks at how the Scottish Museum Sector can develop a resilient, holistic approach to sustainability and wellbeing for museums.

Description

Our name,“Cantie Museum” is borrowed from the 1794 Burns’s song, “Contented wi’ little and cantie wi’ mair” This sparks the question, Mair’ of what? Money? Collection? Visitors? Likes? Followers? The Cantie Museum Project combines a holistic and resilient approach to sustainability and wellbeing. It is coordinated by the National Museums Scotland, Edinburgh Museums, Glasgow Museums, Falkirk Community Trust, Museum Galleries Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland to build a Cantie Museum community of practice. Our manifesto is based upon 6 principles: • Create conditions for wellbeing • Pursue mutual relationships • Value the environment and be a steward of the future as well as the past • Be an active citizen • Learn for resilience • Measure what matters The purpose and responsibilities and of museums are constantly challenged in response to the changing social and economic necessities at local and international levels. Museums have opportunities to influence, challenge and transform the ways visitors think. Whilst museum understands and appreciates the role they play in society. Cantie Museum provokes museums to think differently as the context is now different. There is a need for museums to stay relevant and support community resilience in response to the pressing social, economic and financial challenges. Inspired by New Economics Foundation’s five ways to wellbeing, museum is a space to be active and learn. It promotes the idea that happiness is not about material growth and unsustainable self-indulgence. It is about people doing more connecting, being active, giving and leading meaningful and happy lives. Our aim is to make the Cantie Museum community of practice a base to share ideas, resources, skills and expertise and collaborate support initiatives to show that museums can change lives in Scotland, and healthy culture are at the heart of healthy communities. There is no bigger challenge to human society than the challenge of creating a sustainable future. It’s more than changing to low-energy light bulbs or recycling the loo paper. This challenge demands new economic paradigms, those new paradigms need new understanding of what constitutes prosperity and success, and that understanding needs to be based on different cultural assumptions. Museums have a key role to play because they are places where culture can and should be negotiated, not least the culture of inheritance.
