From youth education to gallery exhibits and private events, The Carr Center aims to be your home for the arts in Detroit. Visit us anytime!
When the 20 year old Arts League of Michigan (ALM) moved into its new home in July of 2009, it was a victory after a 4-year effort. The ALM no longer had to hold arts activities in scattered Metro Detroit venues-it had its own. The new home is a 19th century building formerly known as the Harmonie Club, in what is now, Paradise Valley. It was re-named the Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center. The public was welcomed to a fall gala. By that time, the ALM programs were up and running. At the heart of ALM are the arts classes for youngsters ages 7 to 18 in creative writing, dance, theater, photography and especially jazz and visual arts. They have been identifiers of the ALM community-focused arts mission since 1991. That recently expanded with the addition of arts classes for adults. To date, add a succession of art exhibitions, celebrity concerts and master classes, art fairs, artists who use free space in which to create, literary and musical entertainment in Beatrice Buck Park, the new gift shop, plus rentals by the public for private affairs ranging from baby showers to fashion shows to corporate parties, seminars/workshops, weddings and more, and you have the active, stimulating, community-friendly center of arts and culture that the Carr Center is today.

Tim Warfield with the MSU Be-Bop Spartans. The house is so hot, it's smoking!! And the pre-concert pop-up supper club with Chef Reva Constantine. A GREAT night to be at the Carr Center!
Tim Warfield, recently named "Tenor Saxophonist of the Year" at the annual Clef Club Jazz Awards in Philadelphia, appears Sunday March 6th at the Carr Center. Here's a sampling of his "spiritual, swinging, smokin’ and especially soulful" sound (as described by the Washington Post).
Noted local chef Reva Constantine is partnering with Colors Restaurant and the Carr Center to create a pop-up supper club on Sunday March 6th, featuring a four-course dinner followed by a performance by famed Jazz saxophone virtuoso, Tim Warfield. The seasonal menu showcases the creativity and playfulness that have won Chef Reva a loyal following. The theme of the March 6th dinner is "Winter Breakfast for Dinner." “I created this fun “breakfast’ menu because my favorite meal of the day is breakfast. I wanted to take breakfast to a new level and showcase it for dinner without it feeling like its six in the morning.” 1st Course: Green "Scotch" Egg and Ham (pesto scotch egg, roasted winter vegetables, crispy prosciutto ham and Whole Grain Mustard Dressing). 2nd Course: Shrimp, Chorizo and Waffles (Crispy buttermilk fried shrimp, chorizo, slow cooked pinto beans, crema, cotija cheese, corn chive waffle and green chili sauce). 3rd Course: Steak and Chips (Applewood smoked teres major steak with crispy balsamic potato chips crumbled bleu cheese and confit tomato basil relish). 4th Course: Late Night Cereal (Cookie crisp cereal milk Ice Cream with double chocolate chunk cookies, cayenne whipped cream, and salted peanut butter caramel sauce.) The dinner begins at 5pm, giving diners plenty of time to enjoy the meal before heading upstairs to the intimate setting of the Carr Center’s Knight Suite for the 7p performance by Tim Warfield with the MSU Jazz Orchestra I under the direction of Rodney Whitaker. Tickets for the performance and 4-course dinner beforehand: $65 http://saltacid-pop-up.ticketleap.com/salt-acid-4-course-pop-up-dinner/
