We provide training and support for teachers, counselors and others who wish to learn to teach Koru, the only evidence-based program for teaching mindfulness that is specifically designed for the emerging adult population. Emerging adults are young adults from about the ages of about 18-29. They are in a stage of development that has become increasingly challenging and stressful and they are looking for ways to manage their stress, enrich their lives, and live with deeper meaning. Mindfulness training has proven an effective means to these ends.Mindfulness encompasses both an action and an attitude. The action is paying careful attention to each moment of your life, rather than spending your time with your mind lost in worries about the future or regrets about the past. The attitude involves the qualities of mind you bring to your careful attention to the present moment: curiosity, patience, compassion, and the absence of judgment. Learning to live mindfully is life-changing. Anyone can do it, but it takes a lot of practice and it has to be introduced in ways that make it seem appealing. Appealing to college and graduate students as well as other emerging adults is The Koru Center’s primary aim.

General Info

Koru was developed at Duke University’s student counseling center by Holly Rogers, M.D. and Margaret Maytan, M.D. It is an evidence-based, developmentally targeted, four-session workshop for introducing emerging adults to the practice of mindfulness. The manual for the program is Mindfulness for the Next Generation: Helping Emerging Adults Manage Stress and Lead Healthier Lives. A randomized, controlled trial of Koru has just been completed, and the results show significant improvements in perceived stress, sleep, mindfulness, and self-compassion. At Duke, Koru classes are extremely popular and many students report that the class is transformative for them. It is our hope that The Koru Center can assist agencies and individuals elsewhere who work with emerging adults to begin using Koru to train their young people in the transformative practice of mindfulness. Koru is a Maori word that literally means “looped” or “spiraled,” and it is the word that is used for the unfurling fern fronds that are so abundant in the Maori’s homeland of New Zealand. The Koru symbolizes new life, growth, balance, and harmony. The Koru is a natural representation of the ideal balance between new growth and stability, the balance we promote for out students.
