Description

In 2016 we were fortunate enough to live on a friend’s property where there was plenty of room to begin creating a dream garden. We had built a small cabin for ourselves and were ready to explore how to thrive off the land and reduce our costs while also improving our health and fitness. I had adopted a plant-based diet about 6 months earlier and was keen to now grow the food myself. Knowing that it was not permanent and having almost no money to begin the project was daunting at first but it also made us get more creative and think outside our normal headspace. When the idea of a Chakra Garden came up, we wondered if it was possible and reached out to Google to explore if it had been done before, if it was possible at all. Once we had a little inspiration, it was all systems go and we researched what plants might go in. Although we’ve both had gardens before and have been picking seed for years, we hadn’t really realised just how many plants were edible and tasty! Joe was volunteering over 40 hrs each week on the 340 acre property then and I was writing a book so our time was not fully focused on the garden. We drew up a rough plan and got started. First we needed to bring the tractor in, to remove a huge blackberry and soften the earth as it was really compacted. We had access to some old metal tent frames so we put them together with the intent to one day cover them and create a greenhouse for year-round growth. This frame measured 17m x 5m around the base and was about 2m high at its apex. We created removable sleeves out of old chimney flue and cemented the poles into the ground. It had to be extremely sturdy due to severe winds that often would destroy everything in their path on that section of the property, as we had experienced in early 2015 with the loss of a brand new gazebo that was heavily pegged into the ground! We pulled apart some old flat-pack furniture to use as timber boxing for our garden beds, cutting up some old aluminium tent poles into 500mm lengths to stake the boxing in with. We had enough boxing for half the garden, about 8 beds. These beds measured 1200mm w x 1500mm l x 800mm d and were quite solid. There was a pathway 1500mm wide up the centre of the garden and spaces 1500mm wide between each bed for ease of access in any situation. It was now time to begin planting. A friend had given us a few pots of herbs when they moved on, so we put those at the front on a couple of free sheets of colourbond. We then placed besser blocks in front of the garden frame and filled them full of potting mix to create more pots for herbs. The herbs went in and we began planting out red, orange, yellow and green plants in the prepared beds inside the frame. We found an old bath tub and some plastic drums which we put on a massive tarp above the garden for what I call ‘wanderers’, plants that like a lot of room like pumpkins, squash, sweet potato, zucchini, potato, etc. Everything got a good soaking and feed with organic, plant-based food and we began looking for more free timber to finish boxing off our beds. Then tragedy struck, Joe hit his thumb with a sledgehammer while we were boxing off one of the beds and we had to make an emergency dash to the hospital. Luckily nothing was broken but it was a very nasty injury that took months to heal and limited his involvement with the garden for a while. Although our internet access was extremely limited the whole time we lived there, we managed to do enough research to find out about plants we’d never considered before. We also made the effort to not over-plant to ensure no wastage down the track. Just a couple of each type of plant, placed together in the beds and given a loving gift of Ignite Your Spirit® Therapy that I was learning about from Shanti Mission at the time. Each plant seemed to thrive over the weeks ahead as I began exploring different ways to prepare the delicious bounty we gathered each day. I found that every time I walked into the garden, I had enough for my next meal. Every morning I walked around the garden and greeted the plants, checking how they were and enjoying the increasing wildlife that had become to visit. I now had new treats when I feasted on succulent vegetables, herbs, flowers, and seeds and, we acquired 5 fruit trees from a neighbour for $3 each which took off really well too. I had even begun to wonder if perhaps the charity that had given us this amazing opportunity to live so simply and healthily could possibly benefit one day from opening the garden to the public. Each bed was growing around one colour, according to the chakra it represented, and had the element of the chakra represented too: earth-dirt, water-birdbath, air-windchime, fire-solar light, etc. There was a huge space at the end for a meditation space and then we closed off the base of the entire frame with rio and rabbit wire to keep the kangaroos out. These were our closest neighbours, with dozens visiting each morning to join me at my outdoor breakfast table and quietly munch on the grass all around us. It was only a matter of time before they might want my tasty treats too. We crafted hinged gates out of old hinges we found tucked away and tied the rabbit wire onto the rio with cable ties. By now the flowers were all blooming, I was eating baby carrots, beetroot leaves, calendula, violets, herbs and snowpeas with every evening meal and I was so excited by the incredible flavours I was experiencing. Although it was soon time to move on and we had to completely dig up the garden and return the earth to it’s original condition, we felt sure we had honoured our garden at every step. We said goodbye sentimentally and decided that when we have our own property we will be creating another of these gardens. We learned so much and I am still sampling new tastes as often as I find them now, thrilled to be opening up my tastebuds to so many gorgeous, natural flavours. That garden changed our lives and we will use the next one to help change the lives of others one day. That’s our vision and this business is the first step to making that happen. We recognise the incredible bounty of nature that we have access to in our work now. Every day we are looking for seeds and products to offer you, particularly seeds from edible, colourful and native plants to help you bring more health and vitality into your life, garden, and home too. If you’re a business customer, we know you’re also interested in the long-term sustainability of plants in this country and we’re glad to be partnering with you in this way also. We aspire to be a dynamic business that grows and changes with flexibility and dignity and we will be offering an expanding array of products, information and services to complement any size Chakra garden as we grow and learn our business and ourselves. Thank you for helping us to make a healthy, worthwhile difference in this world for ourselves, the children and families, and for future generations for years to come.
