A legacy page for The Durham Free School — 2013 - 2015. Maligned, destroyed, but never forgotten.
The Durham Free School was a new 11-18 state secondary school which first opened its doors to Year 7 pupils in September 2013, but was sadly forced to close in March 2015 after being used for political gain and becoming victim to a campaign of misinformation and corruption. Building up from Year 7 and 8, it would have grown eventually to 630 pupils, including a sixth form. The school provided an exciting new educational opportunity for children and communities. It offered a distinctive and inclusive education, shaped by traditional Christian values and welcoming to all. The School offered a high quality education in a caring, Christian environment in which each pupil was known, valued and encouraged to achieve his or her individual potential. We were committed to outstanding academic performance and to fostering a love of learning in our students. The Durham Free School offered an excellent broad academic education and high quality, useful vocational qualifications. By developing good character and relationships with strong pastoral support and good discipline we created a safe and happy school that - had the school been given the chance to continue - would have allowed pupils to leave us at the end of their education journey both well qualified and skilled, ready to make their own contribution to their communities. This was to be delivered within the framework of a traditional Christian ethos, although the school actively welcomed and respected pupils of all faiths and none.
