Description

The Family Brewery got it's name from the fact that in many ways we are all our own individual micro brew. Our family, and even the physiology we inherit from your parents, have a lot more to do with who we are than we think. Understanding our history - including our childhood and our family roles - in conjunction with our own individual phenomenological worlds, feelings, and social constructs is an integral part of fully understanding ourselves. The Family Brewery follows Integrative, Humanistic, Existential, and Emotion based therapy models with strong influences from Gestalt and Maslow methodologies. Integrative means I am skilled in using a multitude of methods and therapies depending on which will benefit the client best. I am a humanistic counsellor as I maintain that we as humans have a vast potential for understanding ourselves and for resolving our own problems and are capable of self directed growth if we are involved in a therapeutic relationship in which a counsellor can be congruent, have unconditional positive regard, and demonstrate accurate empathetic understanding. Existential because although deterministic forces affect us and we sometimes cannot control external events thrust upon us, we retain the freedom to choose how we respond. There is also the emphasis on recognizing limitations and responsibilities. As an emotion focused therapist (an empirically supported humanistic treatment) I pay particular attention to emotional awareness and to addressing maladaptive emotions where they are experienced. I am a Gestalt (holism) therapist in that I place a great deal of importance on present awareness, choice, and responsibility; and have a holistic approach to personality. The Maslovian influence is seen in the stress on positive psychology and our individual ability to become self-actualizing persons verses treating people as a collection of symptoms. Although I have for years been counselling in various ministries and outreach programs - and in my home office - I am currently in classes at the Vancouver College of Counsellor Training to get my full counsellor accreditation. When I'm fully qualified I will be officially opening and giving a free 1/2 hour meet and greet session where we can decide if we're a good match and can work well with one another. Regular price for an hour long session is $150. A sliding scale that reaches $0/hr is available for qualified clients with proof of household income.
