Really great programme on right now by Jamie Oliver, Jamie's Sugar Rush. Glad to see someone tackling the problem of sugar and hidden sugar. Many of my clients cannot believe how much sugar is in food once I teach them how to read food labels. We simply must all dramatically reduce our sugar intake, and take back control of what we put in our mouths. I strongly believe that those in power need to wise up and sort out food labelling and how much sugar goes into our food.
The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition, an independent government advisory body, has this week recommended that all people in the UK take Vitamin D supplements. It’s the one supplement I give my family every day, unless it’s very sunny (which isn’t often!). A deficiency of Vitamin D has been associated with increased risk of osteoporosis, due to the fact that Vitamin D is needed for calcium absorption. Also low Vitamin D levels may increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, fertility problems and autoimmune conditions. I always recommend people take Vitamin D3 (this is not a vegan form by the way), as it’s the form used by our bodies and better absorbed. Around 1000 – 2000 iu per day for adults, with food is a good maintenance dose. If you want to have your levels tested, I can organise this for you - £50 for the finger prick test and a short consultation to review the results.
