Description

The Freedom Cafe is an innovative non-profit cafe which directs its proceeds toward the cause of ending human trafficking and the commercial exploitation of all people. We are local leaders in specialty coffee and tea, a growing music venue, and an educational center aimed at helping our local community create a slave-free world. Our location at the edge of the University of New Hampshire campus gives us the opportunity to be a hub of student life, as well as a landmark for the local community. The model is fairly simple. Each coffee, tea or espresso drink is served for free. We suggest donations based on fair market value. Because we are run primarily by volunteers and our building space is donated, we are able to cover our basic supply costs (ethically sourced coffee, tea, cocoa, cream, sugar,) for about a dollar per cup. When customers make a fair market donation, or give what they would normally pay at a cafe, every cent OVER that first $1 supports our featured non-profit organization. Our model is only made possible through the donated time of our Volunteers—Freedom Workers—and the donated space of the Light House Student Ministries building. Regular educational and artistic events in our cafe space are a primary tool for creating a more informed and engaged community around this issue. If you are interested in getting more information about the Café and human trafficking, like our page for updates. Please contact us at bryan@freedomcafedurham.org for more info.

We need both Freedom Drinkers and Freedom Workers to get this vision off the ground and moving to help end human trafficking. Freedom Drinkers are our passionate customers who choose to get their coffee and tea from the Cafe, and wish to be informed of Cafe events and on-goings. Requesting to be a Freedom Drinker will put you on an e-mailing list that will give occasional updates and keep you in the loop! Freedom Workers are our passionate volunteers who help make this Cafe run smoothly. One of the main roles of our Freedom Workers is operating our café from behind the counter as baristas. If you or your organization would like to commit to a regular shift, please contact us at sean@freedomcafedurham.org. We also have need for people to take on “behind the scenes” work, such as maintenance upkeep for our café space, Marketing, Accounting, Event planning, Outreach, and Non-Profit partner research. For people committed to the vision of our café with time to give, we have several internship positions available. We also want our café to be a place where café beverages are appreciated and explained. We do not have to-go cups. This is a place to get a drink that was brewed for you in front of your eyes, have a seat, and strike up a conversation (or read!). But if you have to get Freedom Café on-the-run, we ask that you bring your own to-go mug. We make our coffee with the Aerobie Aeropress (http://aerobie.com/products/aeropress.htm) We supply our coffee from local coffee roasters who focus on Direct and Fair Trade sources.
