Sunderland's 1st Indian Tapas restaurant offering an unique & chic Indian dining experience in the City.
We are very proud to be the first Indian Tapas restaurant in Sunderland City Centre. The Tapas concept simply means 'finger food' designed to share and as an accompaniment with your favourite beverage. However, this is one restaurant with a difference – It is a Social Enterprise restaurant. It is going to support special needs children in Sunderland. How? Our aim is simple. We want to equip these young people with increased confidence, empowerment, social skills and aspirations as well as an understanding of the hospitality sector leading to part-time employment with our support once they are ready to leave school. Profits will be re-invested back into the business to help support this cause. We will work with The Portland Academy and Barbara Priestman Academy and their special needs children offering: • Fun and interactive 8 week based training and development programs in waiter/waitressing within the restaurant/cafe sector. • Engage with other local catering businesses to facilitate ways of getting the children into local work experiences dependent on level of special needs that is needed for the individual and if possible even employment opportunities for the advanced children. To drive it forward, we have formed great alliances with NESEP (North East Social Enterprise Partnership), PSB Training & Cowell+George, the Integrated Ideas Boutique to help build this exciting project. By night, The Funky Indian will be a unique and vibrant Indian Tapas restaurant. But by day, it will be the platform to launch dreams and aspirations. To us this is our opportunity to give back something to the community we live in – You just can’t have a better combination than that! Everything about The Funky Indian is funky. There is no set way to eat. We invite you to tease your taste buds with our authentic selection of mouth watering Indian tapas style dishes. Most diners are now very familiar with the Indian meal. Rather than fix something that is not broken we felt that the market was yearning for a very specialist brand serving creative, original and very tasty snacks and meals. Hence the creation of the City's first Indian Tapas Restaurant. The Funky Indian offers innovative yet classic cuisine of the highest calibre using the finest ingredients sourced from the best suppliers, both locally and abroad. Our chefs are selected to give the diners the very best in flavours from kebabs in the North to seafood & spicy yet tangy food from the South. Get ready to take your taste buds out on a journey of culinary twists! See you soon!

We are not just a Restaurant.....we will be doing something very special that no other restaurant has done yet in Sunderland and possibly the region............we really have something special to share with you all next week which you all will love along with our opening date.
The Funky Indian is a restaurant with a difference. Right from the beginning we want to bring to people's attention the fact that there is no such thing as Indian food. India is the same size as Europe and has a vast array of climatic conditions, religions and historical influences that have played an enormous role in shaping the wildly contrasting foods of its different regions. Indian cuisine is not one cuisine – it has numerous different styles, as varied with the French, Greek, Italian and Spanish.
Great response from our last post, we will keep this post for our selections and inform who will be joining us, we will be choosing 25 people so everybody has a chance and all names will be posted in the thread to show that we are genuinely doing this. 8 weeks today we will be opening - not too far but promise we will bring something totally unique and different to Sunderland!
We had diners in from as far as Anlwick, Ponteland and North Yorkshire last night who came especially just to dine at The Funky Indian and they weren't disappointed! If Only Carlsberg did Funky Indians! #justsayin
