A series of events exploring the origins, diversity, and creativity of language. Organised by the Department of ELL (Kent), part of Being Human 2014.
During a week of events in Canterbury and the University of Kent we will explore the origins, diversity and creativity of language, a uniquely human faculty. These events, part of Being Human, the UK's first festival of the humanities, will tackle a variety of questions about language: Why is human language so special and how does it differ from the communication systems of other animals? How did language evolve in the human species? Why do we not all speak the same language? How many languages are there in the world and why is it worth preserving them? How do we learn our mother tongue and why does this process differ from learning new languages later on in life? What is the creative potential of language? Drawing on recent research in linguistics and related disciplines, audience and academics will engage in lively dialogue during a series of events that include an interactive exhibition about language, a public lecture on bilingualism, and film screenings followed by Q&A sessions. Free admission to all events | Booking required only for the workshop, but advance booking is advised for the film screenings. *Exhibition* - Where?
