This summer, the Food Shelf will be rolling out a new program, the Good Food Truck, designed to use the power of fun and good, local food to feed people who are hungry, create opportunities for people who are under- or unemployed, and unite the community around the fight against hunger! The Good Food Truck will be bringing free meals and a fun, festive atmosphere to our hungry and food insecure neighbors using a new 16 foot long truck that is equipped to cook and serve meals on the road. Starting this year, the Good Food Truck will offer free meals to low income community members every week from June through November at partner organizations and meal sites throughout Chittenden County. Clientele of the Good Food Truck who have a household income at or below 185% of the federal poverty line will be eligible for these free, delicious meals featuring globally-inspired flavors and local foods. The Good Food Truck will have materials available at all times that will contain information on valuable community services like 3SquaresVT (food stamps), WIC, farmer’s market programs for low income households, our homebound delivery program for seniors and people with disabilities and veteran’s assistance services. In addition to offering free meals and assistance to food insecure Vermonters, the Good Food Truck will also enhance our existing job training program, Community Kitchen Academy which is operated in partnership with the Vermont Foodbank. This Food Truck partnership with Community Kitchen Academy creates on-the-job internships for the students of CKA. CKA students will help with food preparation and customer service while learning valuable job skills. The Good Food Truck is also an opportunity for the Food Shelf to tell our story to the broader community in a fresh, new way. The Good Food Truck will be at several community events and fundraisers throughout the season operating as a social enterprise, or business, venture. At these events, the Good Food Truck will transition from offering free meals to low income community members to selling entrees, desserts and snacks from a fixed-price menu that is targeted to higher income community members. During these revenue-generating fixed price menu days, 100% of the proceeds from purchases made at the Good Food Truck will go toward providing 120 days of free meals for low income Vermonters. Customers of the Good Food Truck will be powering good with every purchase. The Good Food Truck can be found at the South End Art Hop, at several ArtsRiot Truck Stop events on Friday evenings throughout the summer, and at special events throughout the season. The Good Food Truck is also available for catering events. The Good Food Truck Program will be led by Emmet Moseley, a native Vermonter who brings his past experiences and skills as a 3SquaresVT advocate, Vermont Foodbank staff member, and innkeeper to this position. Emmet also brings an appreciation for local foods, an eclectic and creative culinary sensibility and a sensitive understanding of the struggles of people who are living in poverty. Since starting in this new position, Emmet has been busy establishing the Good Food Truck’s community truck stop schedule where he will serve free meals to food insecure households throughout the county. Emmet is especially excited to bring a weekly community truck stop to Harbor Place in Burlington. Harbor Place is managed by the Champlain Housing Trust and its social services are coordinated by CVOEO, and it is a transitional housing site for people at risk of, or escaping, homelessness. Between 100 and 150 people live in Harbor Place’s facility, a converted EconoLodge, at any given time; Harbor Place residents include families with young children, seniors and people with a disability. Unfortunately, because of its location, many of the families living at Harbor Place have trouble making it to the Food Shelf even though they are in crisis and need food. During the weekly scheduled community truck stop at Harbor Place, the Good Food Truck will also provide additional free summer meals for kids through a partnership with the Burlington School Food Project. Healthy summer meals are especially important for many families since children are no longer receiving meals through the school breakfast or lunch program during the summer vacation. We hope that the Good Food Truck will help us reach the thousands of people, including those living at Harbor Place, who are in crisis, hungry and not currently getting the help that they need. According to the 2014 Hunger Study, there are over 19,000 people who are currently food insecure in Chittenden County. Despite this massive need, the Food Shelf currently serves between 11,000 and 12,000 people every year. This means that there are almost 8,000 people who are food insecure and eligible for our services - free meals, free groceries, job training, and homebound delivery – but who don't currently access the help available. To target these vulnerable community members, we have created The Good Food Truck as a way to expand food access throughout our community in a fun atmosphere with a low barrier to entry. Thanks to HMC, a marketing and design firm headquartered in Richmond who donated their services to brand and design the Good Food Truck, this program has an approachable and cheerful feel. The name and the colorful design of the Good Food Truck were created by HMC to be inviting and as appealing as possible to a large cross-section of people in our community. We hope that the Good Food Truck’s message of good food and fun will help us to reach food insecure kids, seniors, individuals and families who aren’t currently getting the help that they need.
