Description

This blog is primarily for the non-believer, either in the "closet" or out of the "closet." Many people are pressured by friends, family, or community to stay in religion they don't actually believe in any longer. This is an understandable choice (and one I made myself for a few years after I stopped believing), but it is not a comfortable way to live. I hope this blog will provide many excellent reasons to choose secularism over religion. Some of the benefits of leaving behind religion is an embrace of modern ethics and a scientific understanding of life. No religion can adequately describe the rich, complex, and beautiful universe we live in. Letting go of the false promise of an afterlife allows a deeper appreciation of the short lifetime we all have and a respect for life that only has this one chance at life. I hope this blog can provide comfort and validation for those who want to justify their choice to not believe in theism any longer. It is a choice to believe or not believe. Anyone can make this choice if they find the restrictions, contradictions, and outdated morality in their religion have become a stone around their neck in a dark and deep trench of despair. This idea to choose how you believe is commonly thought of as a "leap" of faith. There is no reason you must believe in anything. If the idea of a theistic god watching over you is a comforting idea you will usually find a way to justify your feelings. If you feel that a god with the power to stop injustice but who takes no action against it is a horrific idea you will usually find a way to justify your belief that there is no such god. Then there are others who feel that nobody can or should have a dogmatic belief about the existence of god who find ways to justify this belief as well. For me, the idea of a powerful god who asks for so much sacrifice but cannot keep his(its?) promises is despicable. Also, the god in the bible makes such despicable moral choices that he might as well be a member of the greek pantheon. I much prefer the idea that there is no god at all rather than a immoral deceitful bastard who plays games with human destiny. Many people are pragmatic about religion and say "Well, it helps me and my family feel better about our lives so that's all I care about." - and there is nothing wrong with that. Others think religion is not much more than a social structure with rituals that can give emotional security. The question of if god is "real" or not is not even an issue for some. Other people have a important reason to strongly believe in god. Many of them seek to learn all they can about him to be able to be a good follower. Some of these people may find in their studies that so much of what is said about god in western religion is contradictory and upsetting to our modern eyes. The problem of evil in the world is inadequately accounted for in theistic philosophies and so the solution that there IS no great judge or controller of the world and human destiny is all that can logically exist in their eyes. Once that "leap of faith" is taken which asks that those who believe in god bear the burden of proof of his existence and that is not just taken as a given that there is a god and start arguing about his or her attributes it is difficult to shut your eyes to the overwhelming evidence that the idea of a god is a product of the human imagination along with the needs of the human psyche. There is nothing wrong with believing in god. This is not a blog to insult and criticize those who take comfort in their beliefs in god, destiny, and the afterlife. What IS wrong, and what is important to stand up against, is when religious people and organizations try to force their beliefs on others or our society and to silence all voices of decent and debate with a "God has declared it so that is the end of it" pronouncement. Religious freedom is as important for non-believers as it is for the believers. If religious organizations feel scientific knowledge goes counter to their beliefs or ideas they need to talk about this in their churches or private homes, not in schools or legislation. Modern society has flourished when respect for learning and debate have been respected and withered during times of suppression of knowledge and discovery. This blog also takes a strong stance against discrimination towards non-believers. Many friends of mine who have left their religion have also lost friends and family when people have found out that they were an "infidel." The demonizing of atheists and non-religious people by religious organizations, and some large parts of American society, is unacceptable. This discrimination traps people in a religion they don't like and which is asking for their time and money because they are threatened with the loss of all social support. The view of non-religious people as "bad" or "evil" is also unacceptable and someday I hope receives the public distain of other foolish ideas against women, minorities, homosexuals and others as being deviant and unworthy of equal rights and respect. In all of this I realize I don't know everything. When I left my religion behind I said one final prayer saying I would stay open to any evidence or signs that God is real. I continue to keep that promise and I welcome comments and feedback about gaps in my logic or errors in my facts. I hope that any feedback I get (and give in return) will remain respectful.
