Commissioned by 250 Nashvillians in 1908, The Hotel Hermitage (named after Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage estate) opened its doors on Saturday, Sept. 17, 1910. The new hotel, advertised its rooms as “fireproof, noise-proof, and dustproof, $2.00 and up.” Each of the 250 rooms provided hot and cold circulating water, which was distilled to avoid typhoid. Each room had a private bath, telephone and electric fan, and a device to indicate the arrival of mail.
The hotel underwent a $20 million renovation that was completed in 2003. Through this renovation, the average size of guest rooms increased to 500 square feet creating, on average the largest guestrooms in Nashville. The bathrooms were finished in marble and included extra deep soaking tubs, separate showers, dual vanities, and enclosed water closets.
Since the renovation, an additional $5 million has been invested in further upgrades. Room upgrades have included the addition of iPod docking stations and large flat screen televisions in both the bedroom and the bathroom.
