The History of Cartography Project is a research, editorial, and publishing venture drawing international attention to the history of maps and mapping. The Project's major work is the multi-volume History of Cartography series.
The series focuses on the use of maps as significant sources of information about the near and distant past and as a basis for humanistic study. To date, the Project has published three volumes in five books: 1: Cartography in Prehistoric, Ancient, and Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean (1987) 2.1: Cartography in the Traditional Islamic and South Asian Societies (1992) 2.2: Cartography in the Traditional East and Southeast Asian Societies (1995) 2.3: Cartography in the Traditional African, American, Arctic, Australian, and Pacific Societies (1998) 3: Cartography in the European Renaissance (2007) Three additional volumes are forthcoming: 4: Cartography in the European Enlightenment 5: Cartography in the Nineteenth Century 6: Cartography in the Twentieth Century (2014) All parts of Volumes One and Two are accessible at no cost online at http://www.press.uchicago.edu/books/HOC/. Volume Three will be available beginning June 2013, and the remaining volumes will also be published in both print and digital forms.
