LATO is a non-profit organization created to help victims of commercial sexual exploitation and other complex trauma.
Dr. Clara Whaley Perkins is a practicing clinical psychologist. During travels to Liberia and Sierra Leone, encounters with victims of war planted the seeds for her novel. Her experiences in Africa and working as a psychologist in a Philadelphia hospital continued to inform her thoughts about the impact of emotional and psychological trauma on human development, and over a 15 year period she wrote the novel, Iron Butterfly which eventually inspired her to found The Life After Trauma Organization. The Life After Trauma Organization (LATO)'s mission is to help adolescents and adults prevent and recover from the long-term effects of trauma from commercial sexual exploitation, and other complex trauma. LATO's long range goals are to: • develop long term care programs to empower and help adults and youth recover from trauma; • organize workshops, seminars and conferences that will promote and publicize issues concerning commercial sexual exploitation and human trafficking in Philadelphia, the United States, and elsewhere; • train mental health professionals in the care of those who are dealing with complex trauma The Life After Trauma Organization is recognized as a tax-exempt charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
