Description

The Masked Barber is a one-man barber service created as a result of a hobby along with the desire to help others. "...It is more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35 This Bible verse is the mission statement for The Masked Barber. The hope is that this service will provide a loving service not only to clients, but also to others in the community who are really in need. Half of the earnings from this endeavor will go to those in need. More specifically, every $5 of that will be used to purchase a gift card to a convenience store/restaurant to be given to the homeless population. They can use this to buy food when they are hungry and will hopefully be a better alternative to simply giving money, lest the money go to something unnecessary or harmful. Although it may not be a perfect solution, the hope is that it will be a better one. The Man Behind the Mask: Sehyun Kim is a 20-year old student at UCI, currently on a medical leave of absence after being diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia in late December of 2013. Aplastic Anemia is a non-contagious disease in which the bone marrow, and the blood stem cells that reside there, are damaged. This causes a deficiency of all three blood cell types: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Aplastic refers to inability of the stem cells to generate the mature blood cells. Don't hesitate to ask me more about my personal experience with this disease. I'm happy to share. The Mask: The mask is required to prevent infection from airborne bacteria/viruses due to a weakened immune system. For this reason, those that are affected with contagious illnesses are strongly advised not to come until after being completely healthy for at least a few days. It would be greatly appreciated. Even more so than the physical importance of the mask are the implications of what the mask represents. Beyond my sickness, it has become in some way a part of my identity, while also hiding some of it. Further beyond that, it represents all those who don't have an identity, those who are perceived as faceless even without a mask. It's not about me. It's not about you. Each and every one of us has a God-given identity. Each and every soul on this earth is important.
