Our Heritage and Mission The Memphis School of Servant Leadership is one of many independently run Schools of Servant Leadership around the country. The first Servant Leadership School was founded in 1986 in Washington, D.C. as part of the Church of the Saviour’s goal to begin a “seminary for all people.” The School in Memphis began in 1997 by an ecumenical group of lay and clergy leaders. Then, the School offered an average of two classes a term. Now, there are about eight classes each semester. Classes are free and we regularly partner with others to support events which further our mission; to raise up Christian servant leaders for the church and the world, and in doing so, recall the church to its vocation to participate in the transforming prophetic work of Jesus in the world. Through our mission we: • Offer classes twice a year to lead people to discern their gifts and call. • Embrace contextual Bible Study and the other disciplines of silence, prayer, care of the earth and our bodies, community, study stewardship and Sabbath. • Provide resources to move from discernment of call to just action. • Seek to dismantle power privilege and racism in ourselves, our partners, institutions and community. • Undertake this process in community partnerships and classes embedded in churches. The School is a 501 (c) 3 that does not seek government funding and relies on individual, private, and faith based donations to support our ministry. The Mission of The Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee is to provide comprehensive social services to improve the quality of life of individuals living with Sickle Cell and educational services to the Mid-South community.
