Description

The New School for Drama is a rigorous, collaborative conservatory program for theater artists leading to the Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting, Directing, or Playwriting, or a Bachelor of Dramatic Arts undergraduate degree. The faculty includes some of the finest theater professionals in the United States. The New School, a private university in New York City’s Greenwich Village, has had a theater arts curriculum since 1945, when it gave a home to Erwin Piscator’s Dramatic Workshop. The graduate drama school, established 1994, has become a vibrant center of theater innovation, and the undergraduate program started in 2013 is at the forefront of contemporary theater education. The MFA program takes a carefully selected group of artistically courageous students through three years of professional training. The curriculum covers a full range of styles, forms, and traditions, and includes significant performance and production opportunities. Beyond that, it addresses the practical challenges of building an artistic community and self-producing—skills essential to sustaining a career in the arts in today’s world. New School for Drama graduates are a growing community of award-winning professionals working on and behind the stage and screen in some of the most prestigious venues in the United States and internationally. With multiple pathways through the offered curriculum, the BFA provides students with a high level of artistic training, project-based learning, consistent performance opportunities and, as importantly, knowledge and reasoning skills which can be applied to a constellation of 21st century career challenges and choices. Through a shared Graduate and Undergraduate faculty and learning environment in the historic Westbeth Artists complex in Greenwich Village, access to top design, music, liberal arts and social science divisions across the University, and connections to excellent downtown theater companies, The New School for Drama offers unparalleled opportunities for courageous and engaged theater artists and performers.

General Info

The New School for Drama is a three-year intensive program dedicated to training artists in the fields of Playwriting, Directing, and Acting. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre. Because we are an MFA program, every applicant to The New School for Drama must hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. The three-year MFA program is progressive—students begin with a course of self-discovery, explore technical craftsmanship in the second year and finish by writing, directing, and acting in full productions, as well as developing a business plan for the transition from student to professional artist. The actor is encouraged to stretch the fabric of his/her talent through a combination of disciplines—including the rigor of Alexander Technique, an exacting voice and speech curriculum that universally coordinates several systems of training, as well as the acting techniques of Stanislavski. The playwright, through one-act festivals and main stage productions, is trained within the context of real world conditions that augment and enhance his/her individuality. The director is encouraged to learn what the word "story" means and how to express, conceive, and create visionary theater also through mainstage and one-act productions. Through the discovery process, a faculty of working professionals nurtures and guides the unique and original voice that each student possesses. Ultimately, students gain a rooted sense of who they are as individuals and how they may join, collaboratively, in finding their individual and collective artistic expression. The MFA program at The New School for Drama relies on collaboration within your class. Playwrights work on their scripts in rehearsal and benefit from hearing and seeing their work performed. Directing and acting students work closely together as well. Playwrights, actors, and directors are all often represented (by both students and teachers) in rehearsals or in the classroom, giving you a glimpse of what it means to develop a new play. This crossover within your class lets you learn from your peers as well as from the instructors at Drama, and also gives you the opportunity to develop important and long-lasting professional connections. The four-year BFA program in Dramatic Arts at The New School for Drama prepares students to be 21st-century artists and creative thinkers. Professionalism and community are at the core of the program, which provides a rich multidisciplinary, project-based investigation of theater arts and focuses on the development of critical thinking and collaborative skills. Prospective students apply for direct entry into the program, which begins in the freshman year. Through studio classes, performance opportunities, and coursework in aesthetic inquiry, the history of theater, and collaborative research, students cultivate the intellectual, conceptual, and critical skills needed to launch careers in theater or any field that requires creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and effective communication. Our interdisciplinary curriculum enables students to explore acting, directing, playwriting, creative technologies, liberal arts, applied research, and collaborative processes. Students learn to frame questions imaginatively and consider problems from multiple perspectives.
