Official Facebook page of The Public Theater. Visit http://www.publictheater.org for more info and tickets to upcoming productions! The Public Theater is the only theater in New York that produces Shakespeare and the classics, musicals, contemporary and experimental pieces in equal measure. The Public continues the work of its visionary founder, Joe Papp, by acting as an advocate for the theater as an essential cultural force, and leading and framing dialogue on some of the most important issues of our day. Creating theater for one of the largest and most diverse audience bases in New York City for nearly 60 years, today the Company engages audiences in a variety of venues—including its landmark downtown home at Astor Place, which houses five theaters and Joe’s Pub; the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, home to its beloved, free Shakespeare in the Park; and the Mobile Unit, which tours Shakespearean productions for underserved audiences throughout New York City’s five boroughs.

"Halfway through the off-Broadway run, I decided that I wanted to do a very specific King George accent....So right before I went onstage, I’d read a page from a book out loud in the accent to get into the mindset. ... This young new author Isaac Oliver sent his book Intimacy Idiot to The Public Theater before it was published, and at first I thought, “Whatever,” and put it with this stack of other books. But when I started the accent, I pulled it out and it was hilarious. I read a page of it every day." Our Pub Club darling Isaac Oliver gets a shout out from old King George, Jonathan Groff, in The Hollywood Reporter!

I have written a play I would like to submit to you for consideration. The synopsis: Six low-level female workers at New York Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn form a su-su, a form of rotating savings and credit association popular in many Third World countries.. When the leader is slain by a rogue cop her daughter is selected to succeed her. Her death almost leads to disbandment of the group amidst rumors that she was a drug dealer. The cop presents to Methodist hospital with a peace of steak stuck in his throat. Under sedation, he recants his allegations against the victim. He's prosecuted and sent to prison. The victims' daughter discovers that her mother had invested the contributions in high-flying stocks. The members reconvene to receive their purses. The cast of thirteen women and one man are from twelve countries. Would you like to see the script? Thanks, Ofem Ajah, MD Gastroenterologist, Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn NY
