Description

STONEHOUSE is fast becoming the trendy place to dine, with the success of the Royal William Yard. Now a chef from one of the world's most remote islands is opening his own diner midway between the two. Martin Benjamin hails from the tiny island of St Helena, a speck of rock in the South Atlantic whose main claim to fame was the incarceration of Napoleon. Mr Benjamin, aged 37, left the island at 18 and came to the UK to qualify as a chef. Since then he has worked as far afield as Aberdeen, the Falkland Islands and the Oyster Shack near Bigbury, where for two years he was head chef. Now Mr Benjamin has opened his own restaurant, The Samphire Bush, in what used to be Trattoria Pescatore in Admiralty Street, Stonehouse. He plans to start small, with him doing all the cooking, his Polish partner Maja Sinkiewicz front of house, plus other staff. Initially, the restaurant will have just 26 covers and be open only for dinners. But Mr Benjamin plans to expand to 50 covers and open at lunchtime too as the business grows. There will be a strong emphasis on seafood, with meat options and a vegetarian main course. Mr Benjamin said: "I have named the restaurant The Samphire Bush after a shrub which grows along the cliffs in St Helena, and where we used to hide our fishing rods. "It's also good for kindling. "From St Helena I'm hoping to import tuungi, a very strong drink made from fermented cactus which is rather like tequila. "And I may also have St Helena coffee, which is among the best in the world." Mr Benjamin, who lives in Devonport, said he doesn't feel the proliferation of restaurants in Plymouth, and the Stonehouse area, will harm his business – in fact he believes it will encourage people to eat out. He said: "I am hoping the Royal William Yard effect will help me. "This is the first business I have owned and I'm very excited." Mr Benjamin is renting the venue from owner Nick Garcia. He had run the Trattoria Pescatore with his parents, but closed the diner in 2008 soon after the death of his father Tim. The building had since been rented to another chef, who kept the name, but decided not to renew the lease on expiry of its five-year term. Mr Garcia is also positive about the effects of the boom in Plymouth's restaurant sector, and said independent restaurants play an important part, adding individuality to a sector which could become too uniform if dominated by chain-run outlets. "With the small independents you get a better experience dining out," he said. "Plymouth is good for restaurants now, and there are a lot of good places to eat."
