Description

The School for the Philosophy, Economics, and the Humanities offers seminars taught by PhDs who are fantastic teachers and specialists in famous works of philosophy, economics, literature, history, and film. They teach rigorous and lively discussion-based seminars fueled by free craft beer and free gourmet coffee in our beautiful seminar rooms near 16th and Market Street in Philadelphia. All seminars are five weeks long, centered on one famous text, and have a maximum of 18 adult participants. Each two hour meeting aims to cover about 40 pages of text at the most. Meetings take place once per week in the evening or weekend. A second teacher often sits in on the seminar because it’s helpful to have someone from another discipline taking part, and because our teachers love to learn from one another. TRY THE FIRST MEETING OF ANY SEMINAR FOR ONLY $39 AND WE'LL SEND YOU A FREE COPY OF THE BOOK. YOU ONLY NEED TO PAY FOR WEEKS 2-5 IF YOU LOVED THE FIRST WEEK AND ARE INTERESTED IN CONTINUING. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FIRST MEETING WILL HAVE SOME REQUIRED READING (CHECK THE SEMINAR DESCRIPTION FOR MORE DETAILS). The seminars are a great opportunity to learn a ton, have stimulating intellectual conversations, and meet fascinating people (participants often move on to a bar after the seminar to continue the conversation). When we screen films for our film seminars, the screenings are free and open to anyone whether or not you are enrolled in the film seminar. There is no homework other than the required reading of the primary text. Teachers make presentations, ask provocative questions, keep the discussion focused, and maintain a relaxed, non-judgmental atmosphere. They'll likely be drinking beer too. Volunteers will usually be given a chance to make a short presentation at the teacher's discretion. New seminars begin every 2 - 3 weeks.
