Another terrific day at the The St. John's Actors Studio Easter Acting Camp! Monica Walsh had the first part the morning to do whatever she wanted with the gang with her Voice and Movement Workshop. She didn't disappoint! She has a fabulous rapport with the teens and her workshop was excellent. Fun exercises that challenged the students and gave them more tools to use as they explore text and how the body moves. I was very impressed with Monica's class and would highly recommend her workshop to any group anytime. Her class would be suitable and adaptable to any age range or experience. Thank you Monica for a wonderful start to Day 3! I followed with a Voice-Over Technique workshop. This entailed setting up a sound system and playing various ads/voice-overs that I have been involved with over the years and answering questions about the work and process involved. The students then got the opportunity to read and record several samples and listen to the playback, making adjustments as we went. We ended the session with having the students create Voice-Masks. Then it was back to creating our sketch comedy routines - always a great way to end the day. Have I mentioned how much fun I am having? Cheers!

Excellent Day Two of Acting Camp for teens! Yesterday we did some Zone of Silence and some Improv and got started generating ideas for some sketch comedy. Today did some Improv, followed by a field trip to costume bank where we met Debbie Clarke who very generously gave a tour and let us borrow some costumes. Then we had an Intro to Neutral Mask followed by a Character Mask session. The ideas and talent of this small group of 8 is quite remarkable!

EASTER ACTING CAMP FOR AGES 14-16 Students enrolled in the SJAS Easter Acting Camp will get a unique perspective and approach to acting based on Chuck Herriott’s National Theatre School training and many years in professional theatre. The SJAS Camp experience encourages exploration for the actor and makes time for script analysis. Through the Neutral Mask work the actor rediscovers the breath and physical movement of the character and, even though the face is obscured by the full face mask, we can even see what the character is thinking. Character Mask gives the student an opportunity to play and create a myriad of characters to broaden the actors arsenal using a set of 24 half-masks made by Chuck. The Sketch Comedy portion of the camp, designed after Chuck’s directorial work with Mark Critch’s highly successful Cat-Fud Comedy troupe, lets the students create their own theatre though comic parody. The Voice-Over sessions teach speech, timing, and character creation using actual voice-over scripts. The SJAS Easter Camp is a great way for your budding actor to develop important skills and build self-confidence. April 6-10th, 9am-3pm $285/per student. Register at . I just got back from the Ross Creek Shakespeare Intensive Weekend Camp with Ken Schwartz. Fabulous. Entertaining. Informative. Insightful. Invigorating. I discovered some undiscovered country (for me) in this approach. I highly recommend this Camp/PD Weekend for actors and teachers of theatre. It was great to reconnect with Ken and Chris O'Neill and meet some fantastic Nova Scotian actors who take the craft seriously. Thanks Geoff Adams for being my chauffeur. Great weekend! I now have more ammunition in my William Shakespeare arsenal to offer my students. Thanks again, Ken Schwartz and Two Planks and a Passion Theatre Company!

Directed by Ian Vatcher, Produced and Written by Lisa Vatcher. Please do not contact Maggie Alison or Danielle - we only have the info that is below .. - the contact for this project is Casting will be held on February 14, 2015 from 9 am – 4 pm at NIFCO (40 King's Road). Given the number of roles, there may also be bookings on February 15th. Production will take place late March 2015. This film is being produced under the ACTRA AIP Program and payment is $100 per day for principals and $82 per day for Actors. To book an audition, please send film resume and photo to SYNOPSIS Long Term Care is a drama, with comedic moments, that deals with the universal experiences of love, loss and aging. The story follows a father and son duo, Charlie and Sam Pike, as they come to to grips with admitting war-veteran Charlie into a long term care facility. We watch as Charlie uses his charm to come to terms with this new life on the inside. CHARLIE PIKE: Lead role. Senior male, kind smile, wicked sharp sense of humour. We are interested in males that can pass for being early 70s or older. A gentleman to ladies, Charlie has a memory disorder but retains much of his young chap charm. This role involves a range of serious and humorous emotions that are pivotal to the film. SAM PIKE: Principal role. Male, 40s, Charlie’s son, shares his dad’s kind smile but didn’t inherit the smooth charm. As Charlie’s only son, Sam deals with the guilt and confusion of admitting his father, whom he cares for deeply. Sam is uncertain how to interact in this new environment or with his dad’s memory loss. NURSE CLAIRE: Principal role. Female, 20s, slightly shy/guarded, compassionate, has a great laugh. Claire is a new nurse on the ward when Charlie becomes smitten with her. She’s unsure how to interact with Charlie; she finds him funny, charming and totally harmless but doesn’t want to risk being unprofessional in her new job. NURSE HELEN: Principal role. Female, 40-50s, friendly, competent, in-charge. Helen is the Charge Nurse on Charlie’s ward. Having seen it all, she is an open ear to Sam’s concerns. Helen is the nurse you want at your bedside. YOUNG CHARLIE: Non-speaking Actor role. Male, 20s, classic look. This role serves a significant purpose in the film, as it is a look back at Charlie’s younger self in the 1940s. Young Charlie must express his emotions through his eyes and mannerisms.

What a fun group I have on Thursday night for the Adult Acting Class! We had a good few laughs just like we did with the Tuesday night bunch! I love teaching acting. I truly believe I was born to do it! Thankfully I have had some of the very best teachers on the planet to blame my passion on - the late great Michael Cook, the amazing Perry Schneiderman, Carol Rosenfeld and the late, and truly inspirational Pierre Lefevre. And I can't forget my Dad, John Herriott, who was a truly great and passionate teacher of music.

What a hoot last nights class was! A couple of extra people signed on - the more the merrier! Next week we explore Neutral Mask. If students could wear a black shirt/blouse/tee-shirt - nothing fancy - you would find that more beneficial to the process of discovery than wearing something decorative. (i.e. very few old men wear under armour tee's!)

Sketch Comedy Camp 2015 is a wrap! What an excellent troupe of young people. Very funny scenes that were created from improvisations. Happy to have a group that was interested, enthusiastic, hard-working and always smiling. Thank you to the Arts and Culture Centre staff - particularly Debbie Clarke (Costumes), Peter Rompkey and Bev, the wonderful cleaning lady who made the room beautiful after the previous tenants mess.

I have been getting lots of inquiries about the curriculum at SJAS so I thought I would give a brief run-down of what the classes entail. I teach what I know based on what I was taught at NTS and have absorbed through years in the theatre.1. Improvisation - except my improvs aren't the "Who's line is anyway" junk - anyone who can read the rules out loud can "teach" that. 2. Neutral Mask - in which actors discover the importance of breath and movement without words. 3. Character Mask - in which the actors discover characters within them through using half-masks. 4. Audition Technique - the what and what not to do's. + you have to learn two contrasting monologues. 5. Voice -Over Technique. 6. Scene Study and/or 7. Sketch Comedy. Variations on this tried and true class structure work extremely well and the benefits for people wanting to explore the possibilities of our acting classes/camps are endless. No experience necessary!

Tomorrow the Sketch Comedy Camp students at the St. John's Actors Studio will present their work! What a fabulous troupe! They gelled immediately and have created some great characters in 14 fun scenes - all of which were created by lunchtime this past Wednesday. I am so proud of the hard work they did. There will be three troupe scenes, several duets and they each have funny monologues. Just like the ol' Cat-Fud days. 1pm at the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre 2nd Floor Art Gallery. Today, as a reward for their efforts, we played Blind-Fold Fencing! They loved it!!!!!
