Description

Theatre 5 was founded in the mid sixties by a group of like-minded people, mostly from Domino Theatre, who wanted to take Kingston Theatre in a different direction. Domino was secure and knew its path, but that path did not include either using the newly renovated Grand Theatre, (for many years a cinema) or taking leadership in passing on knowledge to a younger generation, through classes in acting and in special performances to school children who might otherwise never see a play. Theatre 5 took up the challenge and for many years toured "jeans and screens" educational theatre, and large scale fairy tales with music, dance, sets and costumes tailored exactly to the historic period or far away country in which the play was set. We got overwhelming support and lots of letters from teachers, parents and children. One of our favourites was from an Ottawa school, whose principal wrote "Every year, with anticipation, the children and I await your arrival, and needless to say, we are never disappointed". The letters from the children are too full of exclamation points to print here, but we cherish their tributes and drawings. We travelled all over Ontario, into Quebec and the Northern United States, and many American schools sent bus-loads of children to wherever we were playing. Those times are over now as school boards cannot come up with the money and bookings (Scarborough, for example would book 90 shows per season in the "old days"). In addition,we lost our beloved theatre at 370 King St. West and had to move to smaller quarters. Here at the Baiden St. Theatre we have found a perfect studio for teaching. The stage is the right size for young actors, and the acoustics are excellent. Even the most timid child can be heard without shouting. In fact, the smaller, more intimate venue has a surprising bonus: since class sizes are kept small, students of all ages benefit from close attention from our teaching masters and really learn the craft. After the break in our teaching and production schedules, as we moved and refashioned a permanent portable attached to a duplex into a perfect small theatre, with storage and dressing rooms, offices and workshops, we began to test the waters for play productions. We have now had two and half successful seasons at our new location. We know that more good things are coming. Come join us in the adventure!
