Who Are We? Third Space Brewing’s founders are Milwaukee natives with a passion for creating great beers and a thriving small business in their hometown. Co-founder and Brewmaster, Kevin Wright is the backbone of our ownership and operations team. Kevin holds a diploma in brewing from the world-renowned UC-Davis Master Brewing Program, where he graduated top of his class in 2009 before going on to win the JS Ford Award, given to the top performer in the world on the Institute of Brewing and Distilling’s annual Diploma in Brewing Exam. Kevin honed his brewing skills and learned how to run and grow a craft brewery from the ground up, working the past six years for Hangar 24 Brewing in Redlands, California, producing 40,000+ barrels annually. Kevin and his team at Hangar 24 won over 40 medals including a gold medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival. Kevin left Hangar 24 as their Director of Brewing with plans to fulfill his long held dream of creating a craft brewery in his hometown that combines west coast brewing styles with a welcoming Midwestern vibe. Why Third Space? Our name comes from the concept that people need a “third space” in their lives after the first space of home and the second space of work. According to Ray Oldenburg (the man who initially coined the term), a third space is “a public place where people can gather, put aside concerns of home and work and hang out simply for the pleasures of good company and lively conversation.” Many sociologists are now recognizing third spaces as key to development of human community. These “third spaces” have come in many forms over the centuries and across the world – from the biergartens of Germany, to the cafes of France to the taverns of Colonial America – but they all serve the purpose of bringing people together. In creating Third Space Brewing our goal is to develop a place in the community and a product on the shelves that brings people together, encouraging shared conversation and relaxed enjoyment (over a beer or two).
