Description

Thrive CYN, St. John’s, is an umbrella organization that works with the community to: - address gaps in services; - build community partnerships; - increase awareness of existing programs and services; - and to conduct outreach to our most marginalized youth. Thrive was established in 2001 and is part of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Community Youth Networks (CYN’s). The CYN’s were established to provide services and support to resilient youth 12 – 18 years who live in poverty and have limited access to mainstream programs and services. Thrive is seen as a leading youth serving organization within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Over the past twelve years this organization has created some of our provinces most innovative services which has resulted in our organization: - receiving a National Humanitarian Award from the Canadian Red Cross June 2007; - being selected to host the former Governor General Michaelle Jean when she visited our province in 2010; - being entrusted by our provincial government to lead the first provincial research study on youth sexual exploitation August 2010; - being selected by Rogers Communication as the first local independent partner and recipient for the Rogers Youth Fund June 2011; and - being celebrated by community and government services for increasing the capacity of youth services through embracing partnership development and collaborative approaches. Our current programs and services were developed in collaboration with community to address key gaps in services and include the following: Community Support and Development: Thrive hosts monthly Lunch and Learn sessions and networking opportunities for services providers to meet and share information. Annual Professional development workshops are coordinated to support the growth and development of front line youth services providers. A monthly newsletter / e-mail distribution list also facilitates opportunities to share information and create awareness of programs and services available for youth and their families. In addition, Thrive offers trained facilitators to aid in the process of community development and capacity building. Alternative Learning: Thrive is a leader in the area of community education and alternative learning. Thrive currently coordinates the following educational initiatives: the Youth at Promise Program, which is a foundation literacy and numeracy program for youth 16 – 24 who have dropped out of school; the Springboard GED preparation program; and Rogers BreakThru, a new learning initiative for youth 12-16 who are at high risk of dropping out of school. Thrive is also the sponsoring agency for the Coalition for Educational Opportunities (CEO) and has chaired this coalition since its inception in 2001. The CEO has been working collaboratively to develop an alternative school for youth in the St. John’s region, and our research and work has been highlighted in academic journals and at national conferences. Outreach Services: Thrive coordinates Street Reach, a street-based outreach service. Street Reach works with over 40 volunteers and community partners to offer outreach directly on the streets of downtown St. John’s, and provides a mechanism to facilitate connections between individuals supported through Street Reach and various programs and services. Prevention of Sexual Exploitation: Thrive is the sponsoring agency for CASEY, a coalition working together to address issues related to the sexual exploitation of youth. CASEY specifically focuses on creating awareness of sexual exploitation, coordinating professional development opportunities, advocating for the creation of programming and supportive services, and ensuring a coordinated approach to addressing this issue is embraced. Velocity Adventure: Velocity is a five year project funded by the National Crime Prevention Centre, which targets youth who at high risk for criminal involvement, and utilizes a combination of adventure pursuits, team building processes and individualized support to help reduce risk factors in the target population.

NONIA was founded in 1920 to assist in providing medical care to the outports of Newfoundland. It continues today as a non-for-profit cottage industry producing handknit items that reflect the spirit and tradition of our province. The Newfoundland Outport Nursing and Industrial Association (NONIA) was incorporated as a non-profit business in 1924 after being founded in 1920. It was established to assist Newfoundland outport communities to access health services, by raising money from the sale of hand-knit garments to pay the salaries of public health nurses. In 1934 the health care portion of NONIA’s operation was taken over by the government but the industrial side was maintained and continues today in much the same tradition as when it was founded. Today NONIA is a non-profit organization that is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors and a staff of 4-6, depending on the season, at its retail location in St. John’s. NONIA is a manufacturing and a retail operation and we employ approximately 150 knitters and weavers across the province. The NONIA label is your assurance of high quality and customer satisfaction. Each knitted garment is individually produced to exacting standards.
