The TOOLKIT PROJECT was founded on one simple idea; to improve public health by encouraging girls + young women to adopt healthier hygiene routines. Parents, educators and organization leaders have the tricky task of not only discussing, but promoting these practices to adolescents experiencing puberty. We know the conversation can be sensitive, personal and just plain difficult, so we created the TOOLKIT, a tangible hygiene tool used as a gateway to start the “good hygiene” conversation. Imagine walking into a middle school, you see groups of girls walking from one class to another. Suddenly, one girl in the group comes to a halt. In a panic, she whispers to her friend and they both dash to her locker hoping to find a solution to the unexpected arrival of her menstrual cycle. In fear and embarrassment, she realizes nothing is there. Now what? This story, along with countless other oops-moments happen way more than we would like to think. Social taboos make it difficult to openly discuss hygiene, especially among peers. The TOOLKIT PROJECT encourages peer to peer and educator to student conversation to make for better implementation of healthy hygiene routines. Aside from these conversations, TOOLKITS offer exactly what girls need to incorporate into their daily lives. We recognize that a girl’s hygiene and self-esteem are intrinsically linked. Just as a trip to the hair salon or a fresh manicure can positively change the way we feel about ourselves, the TOOLKIT provides the same feeling by allowing girls to always be prepared. At the TOOLKIT PROJECT, we believe a good hygiene and beauty routine will always make a girl LOOK and FEEL good, because of that, she’ll DO great things.
